CORSET BAG DRIPPING IN GOLD

A few weeks ago, a young lady came to my embroidery shop to pick up some items for her boss.  Once she entered the front show room, she was amazed at all of the items available for sale.  As she surveyed the room, her attention was drawn to a grouping of corset bags.

She immediately fell in love with these bags and asked if they were for sale.  Of course, they were.  Everything in that room is for sale.  She inquired about the price and looked at the various colors, fabrics, and sizes (10" tall and 6" tall).  Once she saw the little bag with a monogram, she once again swooned.

I explained that it was also possible to have her signature embroidered onto the purse and she was shown some handkerchiefs embroidered with handwriting.

Her mind changed from purchasing the already made corset bag, to creating one to her specifications.  Her question was, "Can you make it in gold?"  Yes, of course.  I carry satin fabric in several colors, including gold.

By the time she left, she had ordered 2 gold satin, over the shoulder corset bags, one 10" and one 6", using gold metallic thread, with her signature embroidered for the monogram.

Anyone who follows me knows how much I enjoy and am passionate about embroidery and this embroidery machine.  So, I was anxious to get started.

I had her signature and the first step was to digitize.

She later send a picture of her signature, not so rushed. Both were digitized.  The first, rushed, signature actually fit better on the small corset bag.  The not so rushed signature worked well on the larger bag.

Before creating the bag, there were a few things I needed to know.  What type of over-the-shoulder strap did she want?

I gave her some choices and she chose the beautiful, ornate, gold, sequined trim for the larger bag; and, small, gold cord for the smaller bag.

Since the larger bag required a button for closure, I went through my stash of buttons and found a lovely plain gold button for the gold elastic closure.

The designs were then created in the digitizing program and send to the customer for approval.

Once approved the designs were placed into separate files and the materials and thread gathered.  The embroidery machine was set up appropriately.  The first bag was the 10" bag.  Then the 6" bag.  The cording, trim, and elastic closure were all sewn with the embroidery machine.  Once out of the embroidery machine, the stabilizer and excess fabric were removed.  Voila'!  The only thing remaining to do was to sew the button onto the larger bag.  I sewed it by hand.

The bags turned out beautifully and seriously dripping in gold.

The customer absolutely loved them both.

When I see any one of you, our e-newsletter subscribers, I’m usually taken aback that you know what is going on in my life and the life of Cajun Stitchery until I realize that you must be reading this e-newsletter.  This helps to keep you informed.  Our subscribers are friends, relatives, or customers.  I love hearing from you, too. Let me know what is happening in your life, business, or even if you just want to drop a line to say, “Hello.”

The garden is bountiful this year and George has worked very hard on the garden and yard; although, the weeds seem to have a hold on the yards.  Weeds are a constant battle when we are trying to get beautiful green grass.  Just as one man’s junk is another’s treasure; one man’s weeds are another’s prized store bought plants.  A friend of mine who lived in Iowa told me that asparagus grows wild in Iowa.  In Florida asparagus plants are prized.  A friend of mine from Central Florida told me once that dollar weed can be used in salads.  I would love to send her our entire dollar weed collection but the more you pull, the more it comes back.  I like to watch the P. Allen Smith gardening show on PBS.  Earlier this spring he was talking about his beautiful lantana blooming.  We struggle to control the lantana in our yard from spreading everywhere.  All of this is to say that as we struggle to control weeds in our yard, George and I will sit back in the evenings with a glass of wine and decide where these plants would be treasured.

Speaking of our garden, we have a couple of blueberry bushes.  Each year we watch as the fruit appears.  We keep an eye out as the fruit begins to ripen.  Then one day we will go out to look and all of the ripened fruit is gone.  Obviously, birds and squirrels have the same idea.  There is apparently a special variety of blueberry that grows here.  We tried planting blueberries for years to no avail until one of my friends, a master gardener, gave us the blueberry bushes that we have now.  Our newest theory is that we need to plant more blueberry bushes in a place closer to where we can see them everyday, rather than on the other side of the yard.

On the embroidery scene, lately I have made several of our little corset bags.  Years ago when I was pretty new to embroidery and soaking up information from the embroidery sites on the internet, I ran across a site from, I believe, South Africa called The Purple Hat.  This lady had some of the cutest embroidery designs and a lot of in-the-hoop designs.  The corset bag was one of them.  I bought it.  I’ve made these little bags every once in awhile since.  There are about 5 or so pieces to the bag and it takes about an hour to make one. The problem that I have with the little corset bag is that the 5x7 size is almost large enough, but not quite, to hold my android.  The android won’t go past the waist.  So, I made a larger version, 7x10.  The 7x10 version is large enough for my android, plus a few small items.  They are really cute and have a carrying strap/ribbon.  They can also be monogrammed.  The only drawback is the closure. It is open at the top with no closure.  However, the bag is fully lined.  These bags are now listed in our Etsy shop.  Lots of people have stopped by to look at them but no buyers yet.

We did have a customer last night who purchased a black, military style cap with gold fleur de lis embroidered on it.  Frankly, I’m surprised the fleur de lis caps and visors haven’t sold better.  Where are all of my Saints fans?  It is summer and football season is right around the corner.

Another ongoing project is creating a tweed fill design.  This project is still in the works but it certainly seems that a tweed fill design can be done.

I’m always looking for new monograms to create, especially antique/vintage types.  Pinterest has been a great help in this area.  The problem with creating monograms is that I am not a designer.  I can usually take a picture and digitize it into embroidery, but with monograms you usually have one or a few letters of a particular style but not the entire alphabet.  Designing the missing letters is a real challenge.

This week I received a call from an old friend of mine who worked with me in Pensacola during my paralegal days.  It is always such a pleasant surprise to hear from old friends.  She has an upcoming baby shower to attend and wanted to know if I could monogram baby blankets.  Yes, I can.

HAVE A HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY

To deter spiders from staying or coming inside your house:

Add 20 or 30 drops of peppermint oil to an 8 ounce spray bottle first then fill the spray bottle with water (leave an inch of head space from the top)
Shake for at least 30 seconds before every session you use the spray bottle.

Spray around : The inside of window sills ( all the way around )

Around door frames ( all the way around )

Under the kitchen and bathroom sinks
In the 4 corners in a room on the ceiling

You can also place a few drops of the peppermint oil on cotton balls and place in closets, kitchen cabinets, behind couches…. any out of the way place to keep spiders from returning.

Repeat the process once a week

You can plant it near doors and windows.

Thought this was cute:

What is a birthday?  A birthday is simply a celebration of your birth.  Just by living and enjoying the gift of life aren’t we celebrating our birthday everyday?  I wonder how this evolved into a birthday gift giving and celebration day.  Oh, I’m not complaining about it.  I’m just wondering.  This birthday has been the best ever.

Friday night some friends invited us to their home for dinner.  A couple of mutual friends from Mobile were spending the weekend with them.  The evening was just splendid and relaxing.  The food was fabulous.  There were lots of happy birthday wishes but for a social person, like me, the friends and socializing is always the best present.

The party last night was fabulous, too.  We went to a local bar about three blocks from our home that we used to think was nothing more than a dive.  The outside appearance is certainly deceiving.  When we walked in we saw a darkened room with several little wooden tables and chairs.  There was a large fireplace off to the side and a long wooden bar at the front.  The musician’s stage had a wooden fence around it with a chair for the musician.  It was very nice.  The room was an L shape and towards the back was an “Exit” sign above a door.  Once we went through the door and down a short hallway it opened into a nice sized, well lit, dining area with a large fireplace and numerous tables and chairs.  At the far end of the room are double doors that open to a nice wooden deck with more tables and chair.  At the far end of the deck were stairs descending into a sandy area resembling a beach.   It just seemed to go on forever.

We stayed in the front and took over most of the little tables and chairs.  I was thrilled and surprised that so many of my friends traveled all the way over to this end of town to celebrate my birthday.  The musician of the evening happened to be one of my Facebook friends and had been forewarned of the party.  He played Happy Birthday for me as everyone sang along.   Some of our wonderful neighbors joined in the festivities.  We ate dinner, talked, sang, danced, drank, and had a wonderful time.  Thank you to everyone for joining us.  I had begged everyone not to bring presents because I did not want to deal with tissue paper in a bar.  Only one present arrived.  I was grateful that everyone understood that the party was really my present.  As the evening progressed, George went home to feed the dogs.

After most everyone left, a couple of my girlfriends drove me home for our slumber party at our Cajun Stitchery studio.  Two of the girls were spending the night and the three of us changed into our pajamas.  Another two girlfriends came over in their pajamas.  And another girlfriend followed us from the bar.  The six of us talked and talked and talked and laughed and laughed and laughed.  Thank goodness for my wonderful neighbors who said we didn’t disturb them in the wee hours of the morning.  Of course, the time changed last night so we were able to spend that extra hour enjoying ourselves even more.   After the other three girls left and only the spend-the-nighters remained, we talked and laughed more.  I don’t know what time we ended up going to bed but it had to be after 2 a.m.  They slept in the bed and I slept on the sofa.

This morning I awoke and made coffee, of course.  The girls were sleeping like babies.  So, I went next door to have my morning coffee with George.   Around 9 or 10 the girls woke up.  One of my girlfriends made us breakfast and, after eating, we all sat outside enjoying our coffee.   George eventually came over and we all talked and laughed some more.  The girls went home around 2 p.m.  I sat in the studio smiling and taking in all of the joy experienced at this wonderful celebration.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank those of you who sent beautiful birthday cards not only through the mail but also via the internet.

As a present to myself, I ordered some “ladies” shirts from one of our wholesalers.  I love wearing tee shirts.  I love the feel of jersey.  I do not like crew necks.  Most of the girl friends that I know do not like crew neck shirts, either.  There is a line of Bella+Canvas shirts made especially for ladies.  I ordered one of every long sleeve, non-crew neck, shirt that they offer.  I want to be able to give first hand information on how that style fits, feels, shrink or not, etc.  So far I’ve been very pleased with the shirts.  They do all seem to be softer than normal tee shirts.  The necklines are wonderful.  They are all running around $15 except for the sweatshirt that is about $25-$30.  In bulk, of course, there is a break in pricing.

Speaking of tee shirts, one of my spend-the-nighters fell in love with the tee shirt that we embroidered the zebra with the stripes falling off of it and the wording:  “I think it’s the stress…”  It is a crew neck tee shirt that was much too large for her but she is going to use it as a nightgown and cut the crew neck out of it.

The regular, short sleeve, crew neck tee shirts are still available for less than $10 each.  Make it an even $10 and we will embroider a name on the left chest in either block or script.  This offer is good as long as we have the size and shirt color in stock.

Another “find” from my wholesaler is a faux lamb’s wool throw.  They come in black, brown, and camel.  I ordered one of these throws in camel.  Last night the girls were all touching it and feeling how soft and warm it is.  This throw is about $40.00 but so worth it.  One side is faux suede and the other the lamb’s wool.  The size is 50” x 60”.  It can be monogrammed.

Our recent wholesale order also included some new styled red aprons, some non-woven laundry bags, and a whole bunch of baby and toddler tee shirts.

Christmas is around the corner and all of these items make great presents.  Let me know if you need anything.

By the way, the plumbing is fixed and working.

HAVE A NICE WEEK

Thank you Kathie for the following:

Halloween is coming!

A man is walking home alone late one foggy night...

when behind him he hears:

Bump...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him

FASTER...

FASTER...

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him.

However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping

clappity-BUMP...

clappity-BUMP...

clappity-BUMP...

on his heels, the terrified man runs.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in.  His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.

Bumping and clapping toward him.

The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of cough syrup!

Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket...

and,

(hopefully you're ready for this!!!)

 The coffin stops

Our sweet neighbor, Ms Joyce, passed away today.  A week ago this past Friday she fell and broke/cracked her hip, pelvis, femur, and some vertebras.  Tests at the hospital revealed her bones were so thin from cancer they were opaque and would just crumble should the doctors attempt to insert hardware.  She returned home in agony.  She stopped eating early in the week and went to sleep.  God bless Covenant Hospice.  The family was called in and the nurses took over.  By Wednesday the family was told Ms. Joyce would pass away Thursday morning.  She lingered until this morning.   Frankly, I don’t know who suffered more, Ms. Joyce or the family waiting and waiting.   Perhaps it is unkind to say that someone should pass on.  I certainly don’t mean to be unkind.  She suffered and suffered over the past several years.  This was just the icing on the cake.  I began this week praying to God to heal her.  I ended this week praying that God take her and cease the misery for her and her family.  I have many fond memories of Ms. Joyce.  It always brings a smile to face when I hear her name mentioned.  Love you, Ms. Joyce.

George has embroidered several of the flower sack mermaid towels this week.  They are $15 each.  They would make a great Christmas present.

After Nancy and I both learned the truth about Santa Claus, each Christmas Mama would fill a large bag with our Christmas presents.  One was green and the other bag was red.  She decorated the fabric bags with our names and bells.  They were very pretty.  We always decorated the house the weekend after Thanksgiving and that included the tree.  Mama would put the bags under the tree.  As she bought us presents, she would wrap the presents and put them in the bag.  Of course, we could not open the bags until Christmas morning after midnight mass.  It was so exciting to watch the bags increase in size as Christmas neared.

One year I made George a Christmas bag or Santa Sack with an elf embroidered on the front.  I don’t know what happened to the bag but it was adorable.  The laundry bags that we sell would be a perfect size to decorate and turn into Christmas Bags or Santa Sacks.  The name could be embroidered on the front and the purchaser could finish embellishing the bag with glitter, bells, or whatever they like.

Thank you Bob for the following:

The school teacher was late for school and was driving too fast. The light ahead turned yellow, she thought she could make it and raced forward. It turned red just before she entered the intersection. Unfortunately, a policeman saw her run through the red light and he wrote her a ticket. The school teacher hadn't had a ticket in a long time. She thought she would ask the judge if she could go to traffic school and keep the ticket off her record. "I have a good driving record; I am a school teacher and I would like to request that I be granted permission to go to traffic school," she asked the judge. "So you are a school teacher," the judge said with a smile. "I have been waiting for this for years." "I will allow you to go to traffic school if you write 500 times I ran a red light and I promise to never do it again."

Thank you Patrice for the following:

A man was driving down the road and ran out of gas. Just at that moment, a bee flew in his window.
The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?'

'I'm out of gas,' the man replied.

The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away. Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car and into his gas tank. After a few minutes, the bees flew out.

'Try it now,' said one bee.

The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up. 'Wow!' the man exclaimed, 'what did you put in my gas tank'?
The bee answered,
BP (bee pee).

Last week I invited a couple of our friends to dinner yesterday.  My friend asked what she could bring.  I told her that I had not decided the menu at that time and would let her know.  Relaying that information to George, he said, “They will expect shrimp.  That is what you cook.”  So, shrimp is what we had.  I definitely need to come up with another main dish.  However, no one ever complains about boiled shrimp.

The gnomenator is at it again.  One girl has received two gnomes and one received a set of 4 Saints gnomes.  However, the gnomenator remains a mystery.

The horse embroidery turned out to be a success.  The Wisconsin customer said it was a gift and the recipient was very happy to receive it.

Another order this week came from an Etsy customer who ordered a dozen burgundy napkins with a mermaid with a silver metallic tail.

Another Etsy order this week was for one of our fleur de lis embroidery designs.

We received a rush order for a couple of Pensacola With Kids logos on running shirts.

Most of the week, however, was spent working on the huge embroidered headboard.

Almost any design can be embroidered on a laundry bag, beach towel, bath towel, hand towel, or any kind of towel.  They make wonderful gifts and are great for wherever towels are needed.  Imagine your monogram on a set of towels in your bathroom; all matching each other and embroidered using the color of the room.

Exercise For People Over 60

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.

With a 5-lb potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides.

Hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.

Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato bags.

Then try 50-lb potato bags, and then eventually, try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.

After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

Good news.  We now have a new water heater.  We have learned to run the hot water next door so we don’t have issues with that water heater.  Remember:  when it comes to plumbing is you don’t use it, you lose it.  We did have another issue next door with the plumbing but our plumber said it was just a minor thing to replace the pump in our toilet.  The water saving toilet didn’t pump enough water to flush into the septic tank.  That’s all fixed now.

Once our hospice neighbor’s family learned that she was on hospice, they started arriving.  One of the sons told me that his mom doesn’t seem that ill.  Well, the lady hasn’t been able to go outside of her home for nearly 2 years.  She perked right up when they all started arriving.  She was enjoying the company, obviously.  We once had a dog that everyone kept saying we should have put down.  He was blind, deaf, had all sorts of physical problems and wasn’t able to do anything but lay down all day.  Every time we would take him to the vet he would perk up and jump around and wag his tail.

Thank you for the feedback on the laundry bag last week.  Your feedback is vitally important to Cajun Stitchery.  Every suggestion or comment is given a lot of thought and taken very seriously.  You are the consumer.  I made another laundry bag with a shoulder strap and a pocket on the front.  A pocket large enough for laundry soap and the other laundry accoutrements probably would not be necessary.  Those items can be placed in the laundry bag, itself.  A pocket for those items would be huge and probably not practical, unless the items were small.

Remember the trapunto technique that was described some time ago.  Trapunto is a method of embroidery similar to quilting.  In fact, it is used frequently in quilting.   A layer of batting is place between some cutaway stabilizer and the fabric.  This sandwich of materials is then hooped and embroidered.  The embroidery design has some open areas and some more dense areas, almost like a negative.  Once completed, the unstitched, open areas puff up while the more densely embroidered areas are stitched tight.  It does create a beautiful effect.  There are some trapunto designs in our stock designs.  Some were stitched out this week and a new one, of a zebra, was digitized.

Our young horse rider’s order was completed and mom picked it up.  She loved it.

One of my friends came over this week to place an order and we had a wonderful time.  She was served coffee in one of Mama’s Fiestaware coffee cups and saucer.  She was able to view a lot of our wares.  She ordered one of our red, white and blue baby bibs and needed some embroidery on a baby blanket that she purchased.  She also ordered a clock but didn’t need that order filled right away.  It was such a delightful visit.

The huge embroidery design is coming along.  The digitizing process is extensive.  Each piece of the design must be stitched and tweaked until perfect.  At this point the design is about 500,000 stitches.

This coming Friday evening a very dear friend of ours is coming over to spend the night in the house next door.  We are going to have a slumber party.  We will be celebrating her birthday and her graduation from college.  We seem to see each other every few years at a funeral or some other type of affair but that is all.  There is a lot of catching up on what is happening in each other’s lives.

Don’t forget the flour sack towels with the little mermaids on them.  They are $15 each.  There is one for sale in our Etsy store.  More can be made.  Get ‘em while they are hot.

Have a wonderful week
