October in Pensacola

It has been awhile since I've posted anything on my blog.  Let's try to catch up a bit on some of the more fun projects happening at Cajun Stitchery.I'm so used to embroidering names and monograms on the front left or right chest areas.  This nice lady came to me wanting names on the back of these shirts for her maids of honor and herself for her wedding.  She loved them; as did I.  She wanted something that each lady could use more than once but yet was special.  This did the trick.

We had a few people wanting beach towels for guests and family.  There were some really nice towels appearing at the shop this summer.  As usual, I thoroughly enjoyed monogramming.

I believe both of these sets of towels were ordered on Amazon by my customers.  They got some good deals and the quality of the towels seemed really nice, lush, and soft.
The towels to the left are turkish towels.  They are more of a flat weave than the usual thick, loopy nap of towels.  Nevertheless, they were really nice towels.

The towels to the right are my usual fringed tea towels that I sell at Cajun Stitchery for $5 each.
Usually, with a monogram, name, or simple embroidery, they are only $10 each.

This wonderful customer has been coming to me each year for these towels for her pastor.

The two towels to the left were gifts from a real estate agent to her buyers.  I suggested that she might want her logo but she said, "no".  She and the buyers had become friends through the process and she wanted something more personal.  These letters are 2.5" tall only 3" above the hem of the towels.
A friend and customer of mine asked me to give her a quote on her Mardi Gras krewe's logo.  To the right is the test stitch out of her logo -- still in the hoop.
One day a lady contacted me on my Esty store and asked if I could put a simple Christmas tree and holly on a white baby bib with red trim.  This is the outcome of that little project.  This bib is actually for sale on my Etsy store for $19.85 (free shipping).  I love making beautiful baby bibs and I've had friends tell me they won't buy them because they would be afraid to get them dirty.  I see their point.  The bibs are completely washable.  I just can't seem to stop making them.  I should make some with black cotton fabric. LOL

The simple tote bag to the right is just a reminder that our teachers spend so much of their own money for supplies for our children.  It would be a good idea to get a tote bag and fill it with school supplies for a local teacher.  If you don't know a teacher, there are places online where teachers tell you what they need for their classrooms and you can donate.

I've donated in the past to https://www.donorschoose.org and find this a good organization.  There are many ways to help our teachers.  This is only one.

One of my customers is a 4th grade teacher and also holds down a second job just to make ends meet.  Teaching really is a work of heart.

Until next time, my friends,
Peggy

Oh man, I am not keeping up with my blog as well as I should this year.  Honest, I will try to be more consistent.
Between Mardi Gras activities and Cajun Stitchery work there doesn't seem to be much time to keep up with the blog or anything else.
I've been trying to clean up my computer and organize the monograms better.  I now have one file of automatic fonts.  You know how I keep saying I have over a thousands fonts.  Uh, make that three thousand automatic fonts.  Pre-digitized monograms, lettering, and fonts haven't been counted at this point but there are a lot and that doesn't even count the individual one's that I digitize.  Our designs are over a million and I just keep digitizing.

Unfortunately, you never get to see all of the fonts and designs that we have.  No, there is no one catalog.  So, I remain on my never ending quest to figure out how to let you see these designs.
I cannot list them on Etsy because I did not make the vast majority of the designs and on Etsy it is either handmade, vintage, or supplies.  What I can do is embroider them onto something that I sell.  Just listing a million items would be too much, but I would have to embroider, too.  And if I make the item, too.  OMG!
All of that leads me back to the million dollar question of what do people want to buy.  I can put designs on tee shirts and list them.  I can put designs on towels, napkins, handkerchiefs, baby bibs, etc.  What design, or font would someone want in what color thread on what color fabric is the unknown.

With that said, I've decided to do a bit of all of the above.  We are going to increase our tee shirt inventory and start putting some of these designs on tee shirts for sale in our Etsy store.  I'll probably put them on white tee shirts because designs show up so much better on white.  We can get other colors and other styles.  How do I get that across to potential buyers?  As I said, it is a never ending quest.
This Mardi Gras season I've been fascinated with the Venetian Masks on Pinterest.  Those masks are exquisite. I digitized one of them and have the design listed in our Etsy store.  Also, I put the design on a tee shirt for me this season and love getting those complements.  Maybe that will be one of the new tee shirts we sell on Etsy.
New designs in our Etsy store include not only the Venetian mask but also a jester hat and cute design of a pair of lips with the wording "All people smile in the same language."
Go ahead and browse the shop.  I'm open to any ideas you may have.

This week’s Cajun Corner should be filled more with pictures than words.  It should, but you know that isn’t going to happen.

I sure hope every one of you and your families had a wonderful Christmas.  The week before Christmas, my son, Hank, called daily to see if his package arrived yet.  When it finally arrived we put the box under the tree.  Hank called, “You have to open the box.  I have to explain something.”  So, we opened the box expecting wrapped presents.  Oh no, there were two beautiful housecoats in the box.  What did he have to explain?  He just wanted us to know that the black one is for dad and the white one for mom.  That little dickens just couldn’t wait. But that’s not all.  He received our package and delivered presents to everyone on the spot – without waiting for Christmas.

I must admit that Hank takes after his mother.  For a long time I’ve said we need pre-Christmas presents.  Further, I think that is probably why advent calendars were started with gifts for the 12 days before Christmas.

Although this season, thank God, has been very busy with work, we did enjoy a pleasant dinner with friends early in the season, after the Christmas parade.  She had a bit of an accident early in November on her bicycle and we all teased that she should have training wheels.  Guess what we gave her for Christmas?  Yes, training wheels.

Early in the season was the SOB (Sisters of the Beach) brunch which, as usual, was a hoot. The Wednesday night Mental Health Night a/k/a MHN girls had a wonderful Christmas party.  The Nereids also had a fabulous Christmas slumber party.

Since the girls were all too busy to meet on the Wednesdays after the MHN Christmas party, George and I took one Wednesday night and went to Tippy’s Tavern for their prime rib dinner.  OMG!  It was fabulous.

Cajun Stitchery’s studio was decked out for Christmas.  Hopefully, it will be more decked out in years to come but I was very pleased this year.  Since the front door opens into the “living room,” we turned the living room into a show place for our wares, complete with Christmas tree.  Each day the Christmas lights were turned on for customers to enjoy.  As you walk through the front “show” room, through the kitchen and into our work room, we looked like Santa’s workshop.  Every stage of orders were hanging and stacked everywhere.  It was great! Thanks to our local radio station, Christmas music played constantly throughout the season.  I made a red Santa Sack with zebra print fur at the top.  That Santa Sack carried beads through the Christmas parade.  It carried presents and a change of clothes to the Nereid slumber party.  It was displayed in our workshop and finally was filled with George’s Christmas presents and placed under our tree for the big day.

During the season we had several repeat customers as well as new customers.  All are my friends now.  There were a lot of names embroidered on stockings; monograms on shirts; logos on jackets, and all sorts of wonderful gifts and embroidery.

On top of that, Etsy was booming. I got so tickled because I have an Etsy widget loaded on my android and every time we had a sale, I could hear “cha-ching” from my phone.  At first it kind of startled me.  Later I learned to love the cha-ching sound.  We sold Christmas items, mermaid stocking, laundry bags, placemats, and all sorts of thing.  The best seller, by far, were the handkerchiefs.  Some were for wedding showers and some for mothers and mother-in-laws.  Several of the handkerchiefs were monogrammed and several were not.  Oddly, none of the booger hankies were sold.  I guess that fad is over.  However, lace is certainly in.  This was by far the best Christmas season our little Etsy store has ever had.

We normally take down the Christmas decorations on George’s birthday, January 2nd.  This year the decorations were put away the day after Christmas.  Insofar as Cajun Stitchery is concerned, we need to move onto the next season … MARDI GRAS.  I have begun decorating but more needs to be done.  I’m taking this week between Christmas and New Years to build up our Etsy stock and fill more orders that are still coming in.  Yes, we already have krewe jackets to embroider.

In building up the Etsy stock, the first line of business is mermaids.  There are some beautiful new mermaid items available already.

I have created a new baby bib design made on the embroidery machine.  This design has scalloped edges and is much more girly and heirloom looking than the other rectangular design.  The new bibs have not been listed yet.  In fact, I haven’t even taken pictures of them.  That will come in a later issue.  But remember the problem I had figuring out what to suggest for baby showers.  We have that under control now.

This is the week for making resolutions and I’m working hard on that, too.

HAPPY
NEW YEAR

Thank you Bob for the following:

Mr. Johnson was overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet. He said; "I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least five pounds." When Mr. Johnson returned, he shocked the doctor by having dropped almost twenty pounds. "Why, that's amazing!" the doctor told him. "You did this just by following my instructions?" The slimmed down Mr. Johnson nodded. "I'll tell you, though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day." "From hunger, you mean?" "No," replied Mr. Johnson, "from skipping."

The robe orders were completed last week.  They really turned out nice.

Remember the mystery of the gnomes?  One of our friends finally confessed that she is the gnominator.  Since I missed giving her a birthday present, a nice tee shirt with “I am the gnominator” was embroidered with a red and green gnome on the top.  She received her gift today and loved it.

I had received an adorable gnome but I didn’t tell anyone for a long time.  George and I decided that if I don’t say anything it might flush out the real gnominator.  After all was said and done, it turned out that a couple of other girls were trying to flush out the gnominator and they actually gave the Saints gnomes to another friend.  They told me that their next step was going to be stealing the gnomes from people’s homes.  Luckily, they didn’t have to go that far before we found out the true identity.  Today I found out that although the one was the ringleader, there were several devious accomplices to the gnome antics.  Oh what a fun summer we had trying to figure out the mystery.

Thanksgiving was quiet around here.  I did the usual turkey dinner cooking and we have eaten off of that for about 4 days now.  I don’t plan on cooking again until Christmas.  Well, there are the 2 parties where I promised to make cherries in the snow, again.  I think I’ll drink something containing alcohol while I’m cooking so I don’t get so stressed over it all.

The studio is decorated for Christmas.  At least the front room is decorated and looking good.  There are lots of tee shirts, towels and all sorts of stuff that we sell on display in the front room.  The working rooms are looking like Santa’s workshop.

We have sold a lot of fleur de lis items.  As soon as they are sold, I’m at the machine making more.  The handkerchiefs just floor me but I love making them and people love buying them.

This has got to be a banner year for the Etsy store.  Although people purchase a variety of items from the store, by far the biggest sellers are the handkerchiefs.

Gosh, this season we have embroidered robes, kitchen towels, pot holders, aprons, towels, tee shirts, polo shirts and tomorrow a customer is coming in to have Christmas stockings monogrammed.  Oh yes, I’ve embroidered another chef’s hat.

In the meantime, another mask for glasses design, a turtle, has been created.  That makes three designs for the mask.  Now I need to make lots and lots of each design and sell them.

My new friend at The Mardi Gras Store in Pensacola has a very nifty way of selling her wares.  I’ll let her explain it:

“Krewe parties! We book krewes for a meeting or party at our facility. We provide light Hors d'Oeuvres and mixers, and they provide their own adult beverages. Then they have special pricing while they shop at our store! We'll hold for pickup or delivery, or you can cash and carry like anywhere else! We also offer layaway to krewe members.”

I would love for the Nereids to do this and see what is available locally.  It is time that Pensacola has its own Mardi Gras store.

Today was our annual SOB Brunch at Flounders on Pensacola Beach.  This is one of those gatherings that I look forward to all year long.  The SOB’s are a great group of wonderful, wacky women.

HAVE A wonderful week

Thank you Bob for the following:

Four best friends met at the hospital since their wives were giving births to their babies. The nurse comes up to the first man and says, "Congratulations, you got twins." The man said "How strange, I'm the manager of Minnesota Twins." After awhile the nurse comes up to the second man and says, "Congratulations, you got triplets." Man was like "Hmmm, strange I worked as a director for the "3 Musketeers." Finally, the nurse comes up to the third man and says Congratulations, you got twins x2." Man is happy and says, "Ironic, I work for the hotel "4 Seasons." All three of them are happy until they see their last buddy jumping all over the place, cursing God and banging his head on the wall. They asked him what's wrong and he answered, "What's wrong? "I work for 7up!"

Also from Bob:

There were two guys working for the city. One would dig a hole - he would dig, dig, dig. The other would come behind him and fill the hole - fill, fill, fill. These two men worked furiously; one digging a hole, the other filling it up again. A man was watching from the sidewalk and couldn't believe how hard these men were working, but couldn't understand what they were doing. Finally he had to ask them. He said to the hole digger, "I appreciate how hard you work, but what are you doing? You dig a hole and your partner comes behind you and fills it up again!" The hole digger replied, "Oh yeah, must look funny, but the guy who plants the trees is sick today."

What is a birthday?  A birthday is simply a celebration of your birth.  Just by living and enjoying the gift of life aren’t we celebrating our birthday everyday?  I wonder how this evolved into a birthday gift giving and celebration day.  Oh, I’m not complaining about it.  I’m just wondering.  This birthday has been the best ever.

Friday night some friends invited us to their home for dinner.  A couple of mutual friends from Mobile were spending the weekend with them.  The evening was just splendid and relaxing.  The food was fabulous.  There were lots of happy birthday wishes but for a social person, like me, the friends and socializing is always the best present.

The party last night was fabulous, too.  We went to a local bar about three blocks from our home that we used to think was nothing more than a dive.  The outside appearance is certainly deceiving.  When we walked in we saw a darkened room with several little wooden tables and chairs.  There was a large fireplace off to the side and a long wooden bar at the front.  The musician’s stage had a wooden fence around it with a chair for the musician.  It was very nice.  The room was an L shape and towards the back was an “Exit” sign above a door.  Once we went through the door and down a short hallway it opened into a nice sized, well lit, dining area with a large fireplace and numerous tables and chairs.  At the far end of the room are double doors that open to a nice wooden deck with more tables and chair.  At the far end of the deck were stairs descending into a sandy area resembling a beach.   It just seemed to go on forever.

We stayed in the front and took over most of the little tables and chairs.  I was thrilled and surprised that so many of my friends traveled all the way over to this end of town to celebrate my birthday.  The musician of the evening happened to be one of my Facebook friends and had been forewarned of the party.  He played Happy Birthday for me as everyone sang along.   Some of our wonderful neighbors joined in the festivities.  We ate dinner, talked, sang, danced, drank, and had a wonderful time.  Thank you to everyone for joining us.  I had begged everyone not to bring presents because I did not want to deal with tissue paper in a bar.  Only one present arrived.  I was grateful that everyone understood that the party was really my present.  As the evening progressed, George went home to feed the dogs.

After most everyone left, a couple of my girlfriends drove me home for our slumber party at our Cajun Stitchery studio.  Two of the girls were spending the night and the three of us changed into our pajamas.  Another two girlfriends came over in their pajamas.  And another girlfriend followed us from the bar.  The six of us talked and talked and talked and laughed and laughed and laughed.  Thank goodness for my wonderful neighbors who said we didn’t disturb them in the wee hours of the morning.  Of course, the time changed last night so we were able to spend that extra hour enjoying ourselves even more.   After the other three girls left and only the spend-the-nighters remained, we talked and laughed more.  I don’t know what time we ended up going to bed but it had to be after 2 a.m.  They slept in the bed and I slept on the sofa.

This morning I awoke and made coffee, of course.  The girls were sleeping like babies.  So, I went next door to have my morning coffee with George.   Around 9 or 10 the girls woke up.  One of my girlfriends made us breakfast and, after eating, we all sat outside enjoying our coffee.   George eventually came over and we all talked and laughed some more.  The girls went home around 2 p.m.  I sat in the studio smiling and taking in all of the joy experienced at this wonderful celebration.

I would be remiss if I didn’t also thank those of you who sent beautiful birthday cards not only through the mail but also via the internet.

As a present to myself, I ordered some “ladies” shirts from one of our wholesalers.  I love wearing tee shirts.  I love the feel of jersey.  I do not like crew necks.  Most of the girl friends that I know do not like crew neck shirts, either.  There is a line of Bella+Canvas shirts made especially for ladies.  I ordered one of every long sleeve, non-crew neck, shirt that they offer.  I want to be able to give first hand information on how that style fits, feels, shrink or not, etc.  So far I’ve been very pleased with the shirts.  They do all seem to be softer than normal tee shirts.  The necklines are wonderful.  They are all running around $15 except for the sweatshirt that is about $25-$30.  In bulk, of course, there is a break in pricing.

Speaking of tee shirts, one of my spend-the-nighters fell in love with the tee shirt that we embroidered the zebra with the stripes falling off of it and the wording:  “I think it’s the stress…”  It is a crew neck tee shirt that was much too large for her but she is going to use it as a nightgown and cut the crew neck out of it.

The regular, short sleeve, crew neck tee shirts are still available for less than $10 each.  Make it an even $10 and we will embroider a name on the left chest in either block or script.  This offer is good as long as we have the size and shirt color in stock.

Another “find” from my wholesaler is a faux lamb’s wool throw.  They come in black, brown, and camel.  I ordered one of these throws in camel.  Last night the girls were all touching it and feeling how soft and warm it is.  This throw is about $40.00 but so worth it.  One side is faux suede and the other the lamb’s wool.  The size is 50” x 60”.  It can be monogrammed.

Our recent wholesale order also included some new styled red aprons, some non-woven laundry bags, and a whole bunch of baby and toddler tee shirts.

Christmas is around the corner and all of these items make great presents.  Let me know if you need anything.

By the way, the plumbing is fixed and working.

HAVE A NICE WEEK

Thank you Kathie for the following:

Halloween is coming!

A man is walking home alone late one foggy night...

when behind him he hears:

Bump...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Walking faster, he looks back and through the fog he makes out the image of an upright casket banging its way down the middle of the street toward him.

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

Terrified, the man begins to run toward his home, the casket bouncing quickly behind him

FASTER...

FASTER...

BUMP...

BUMP...

BUMP...

He runs up to his door, fumbles with his keys, opens the door, rushes in, slams and locks the door behind him.

However, the casket crashes through his door, with the lid of the casket clapping

clappity-BUMP...

clappity-BUMP...

clappity-BUMP...

on his heels, the terrified man runs.

Rushing upstairs to the bathroom, the man locks himself in.  His heart is pounding; his head is reeling; his breath is coming in sobbing gasps.

With a loud CRASH the casket breaks down the door.

Bumping and clapping toward him.

The man screams and reaches for something, anything, but all he can find is a bottle of cough syrup!

Desperate, he throws the cough syrup at the casket...

and,

(hopefully you're ready for this!!!)

 The coffin stops
