This has been a very rough week.  Most of the Labor Day weekend was spent working on a rush order for a left chest logo that was needed on Monday.  Tuesday was going to be our Labor Day holiday.  When Tuesday arrived I received a disturbing call from one of my Nereid sisters telling me that one of our youngest members was in the hospital.  She suffered from a cardiac arrest Monday morning and had been in an induced coma ever since because of the time she went without oxygen to her brain caused swelling in her brain.  I sat at the hospital on Tuesday with the family and one of my fine finned sisters.  Although she was still in a coma, the medical staff was bringing her out of the coma.  I was able to visit with her, although she was still comatose.  The medical staff brought her out of the coma on Wednesday morning and the neurologist was able to perform an EEG which revealed a complete lack of brain activity.  Since one of her brothers suffered from kidney failure and was on dialysis, the family decided that her kidneys should be donated to him.  The protocol for that procedure took a day or two and turned out that they were not a match.  The family then decided that her kidneys, and other salvageable organs would be donated and she would be able to help at least 3 additional people.  She was taken off of life support this past Friday at noon.
Needless to say work was not a top priority this week.

A few orders did come in from our Etsy store which, of course, were filled and shipped.
This weekend I have gone through all of the items in our Etsy store and placed 94 items in a Sale category.  A lot of the sale items are marked down at least 50%.  If you are looking for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers, please browse around the store.
This year we have had a few issues with the post office not delivering our items.  The only way I know to track through the mail is via priority mail.  The policies in our Etsy store have changed.  The default is 3 day priority mail, and first class mail upon request.  Shipping to Canada remains the same, first class mail, because priority mail is outrageously expensive to Canada.

Another addition to our Etsy store are a few fall and Halloween items.  Only a couple of Christmas items have been listed at this time but I do plan to list more.
All in all, I just want to get rid of the old stuff in order to make room for newly created new stuff.  As always, I am open to ideas and critiques.  So, bring it on.  What do you like about the shop and your shopping experience?  What don’t you like?  Got any ideas on improvements?
George found two old dining chairs that were left over from the previous homeowner or somehow got in our garage.  He took the seats off and painted the chairs white, at my request.  I plan to recover the seats with, of course, embroidery.  I just have to decide on the design.  You can never have too much seating.
Last year I was looking for large bolts of fabric to make curtains for the studio.  I found an online site out of New York that seemed to have what I needed.  All I wanted was plain, white muslin.  I purchased 100 yards of plain, white muslin and received a fabric that did not appear to be muslin.  It turned out that it was 100% polyester muslin.  That was pretty difficult for me to understand.  In my mind, muslin is a 100% cotton fabric.  I went back to the site and found they offer 100% cotton muslin and 100% polyester muslin.  After a little research I found that you can purchase about any kind of fabric you want in polyester or a poly-blend.  The polyester fabric is, of course, cheap.  The truth is that I’ve just about used up my 100 yards of white polyester muslin on a myriad of items.  It is strong but doesn’t have the nice cotton feel to it.  However, it goes against my “all natural” side.  I later purchased 75 yards of 100% cotton, red muslin from the same company and I am satisfied with that purchase.  I really like the company because although they are the middle man, they state that they purchase only from mills in the USA.  Their fabric is all made here.
The same issue appeared recently when I purchased chiffon scarves from a different wholesaler.  The caption stated that they were 100% chiffon.  When they arrived, I found them to have the same feel as chiffon.  The tag says “100% poly – Made in China.”  I suppose they are 100% poly-chiffon.

Natural Nail Polish Remover:

Pour equal parts vinegar and lemon juice into a small bowl and soak a few cotton balls in mixture. Meanwhile, soak your hands in a basin of warm water for 10 minutes to loosen the polish a bit. Apply the cotton balls on the nail and leave on for 20-30 seconds. Wipe off the polish gently. Repeat if needed.

Spring comes and goes this year.  A friend and life long resident of Pensacola once told me that we have one last cold spell in mid-March and then it is spring.  Usually that is true but this year little frosty days have popped up in April.  And the rain!  It seems we’ve had quite a bit of rain this year.  No problems here.  Our garden is very happy.

We had a week or so of company.  It was so nice to be able to have out-of-town guests and let them stay at the studio.  The bed over there is apparently quite comfortable.  It is too low for my tastes and George promises to make a platform for the bed someday.

It may be the full moon this past week but my printer died and we had to buy a new one.  Then our microwave died and we had to buy a new one.  Now it looks like our Mr. Coffee may be dead.  Goodness gracious!  Things need to last longer.

In spite of all of our activity this month, a lot of embroidery was done, as well.  I finally finished a non-rush project of a name on a huge Christmas stocking.  I kept putting the project off because the customer didn’t need it until Christmas.  George finally said that if I keep putting it off Christmas will arrive and then it will be a rush job.  So, I did it and it turned out beautiful.

In my endless pursuit of trying to use all of my scrap fabric, I made a cute “Happy Easter” banner that turned out very nice.  It is now hanging in our showroom.

Handkerchiefs are the highlight of our Etsy store.  One lady contacted me on Etsy to find out what kind of fabric I had available for handkerchiefs.  After sending her pictures of a lot of fabric she decided that she wanted four handkerchiefs made.  Two of the handkerchiefs were to be made from our black and white pin striped fabric and the other two from our 100% cotton white fabric.  One of the black and white pinstriped hankies was to have an artists palette and the word Dew in script.  The other pinstriped hanky was only to have the word Dewest on it in script.  The hanky with the palette was edged with white thread.  Dewest was edged in red thread.  The other two were on white cotton and edged in pastel colors.   The white and pastel edged hankies were no big deal and they were done using a light tear away stabilizer.  The hanky with the red edge was a bit more complex.  You see, the tear away stabilizer is white and once you tear it away little specks of white can show around the edge.  It does not show on white or light colors but for a dark color like red it poses a problem.  Instead of the tear away for the red edged handkerchief, I used Vilene.  Vilene is a wash away stabilizer.  Basically it is a sheet of starch.  After making the hanky with the red edge I soaked it in cold water.  It turned out beautiful.  The handkerchiefs were mailed to the customer who, upon receipt, replied that three of the hankies are beautiful but the one with the red edge is discolored and hard.  I knew it was the starch so I told her that before she had to send it back and I make another, for her to soak the hanky in cold water.  She did soak it overnight and replied the next day that it is as soft as the other hankies.  She just couldn’t believe it was starch because the fabric wasn’t hard, just the edge.  Ah, another satisfied customer.

A baby shower was approaching and I needed a baby shower gift.  I’ve made baby booties before and have some adorable patterns.  So, I made a pair of baby booties.  They turned out okay, I guess.  They really are not that hard to make.  The problem is all of the little, tiny pieces.  Finally, I got the idea of scanning the pattern pieces into the computer and digitizing them.  OMG!  It worked.  I was able to do a running stitch for the seam and outline, including the little important divots.  Then I turned on my boring needle and the machine cut out the pattern pieces perfectly.  Sweet!  The booties still had to be assembled and sewn on the sewing machine but with perfectly cut pattern pieces it helped so much with the sewing.  Better than that, I was then able to embroider on the pattern pieces before cutting them out.  Yes, anyplace on the pattern can be embroidered, including the soles. They did turn out so cute.  The time involved in making the booties is rather extensive.  It still takes me 2-3 hours to make a pair of booties.  This is much better than the first pair that took me the better part of the day to make.  One problem still remains.  The very last thing to do in making the booties is sewing the front, toe area.  Mine rarely are curved properly.  For my baby shower gift, I made a pair of booties with a matching bib and bonnet.  The bib is also done on the embroidery machine.  The bonnet is easy to make but other than the embroidery, could not be done on the embroidery machine.  Of course, the baby bibs are for sale on Etsy and for custom orders.  The booties are not; simply because I would have to charge $40-$60 per pair, which is ridiculous for a pair of booties.

A friend/customer contacted me about wedding coasters.  Her son is getting married and she wanted a special coaster to go under candles that will be placed on each table at the reception.  In addition, she wanted something that her son and daughter-in-law could keep and use.  We ended up making 5” wide coasters in the shape of a sea shell with the names embroidered on the edge.  Using one of the special features in our digitizing program we were able to embroider the last name as a loose fill stitch on the entire area of the shell.  All 24 coasters turned out lovely and the customer was happy.

Another customer, a real New Orleans Saints fanatic, found a pair of scrub pants in the gold color of the Saints.  She asked that I design something that said New Orleans Saints and included some fleur de lis.  Our end design was “New Orleans” down one side of the pant leg. “Saints” down the side of the other pant leg.  Fleur de lis across the bottom of each pant leg.

Recently we obtained some new embroidery designs.  One of the designs is the Pledge of Allegiance.  It is very pretty.  I’ve heard that schools no longer have the children recite the Pledge of Allegiance each morning.  That is a shame.  What about having the Pledge of Allegiance embroidered on patriotic tee shirts?  Last year George and I purchased identical tee shirts.  They are white with red and blue stripes on the sleeves.  I stitched out the design and it stitched out just fine.  We are now going to stitch it out on our tee shirts to wear for Memorial Day, 4th of July, and other patriotic days.  I’m doing mine on the front but George wants his on the back.  At least the kids can see the words and we will make a statement, too.

You know when my embroidery tech comes by she gets me up to date on all of the latest embroidery techniques and things.  This visit was all about Thread Velvet.  Thread Velvet is a technique which I think is registered to Viking or Pfaff.  The method is to sew a satin stitch in one color with a bean stitch around the edges.  Then embroider another satin stitch on top of the first but slightly larger; and, bean stitch around.  You can have as many layers as you like.  Once finished, slit the middle of the satin stitches and fluff them.  If you use a darker color on the bottom and a lighter color on the top (or vice versa) it gives an illusion of a little strip of velvet and is beautiful.  It is hard to describe but I am definitely going to have to play with this technique.  Everything that I’ve read says it can be laundered but launder gently.  Of course, the more layers the thicker and richer it looks.

Thank you, Sandy, for all of the jokes:

One day, a man came home and was greeted by his wife dressed in a very sexy nightie.

'Tie me up,' she purred, 'and you can do anything you want.'

So he tied her up and went golfing.

She slammed the door and shouted at the top of her lungs, 'Honey, pack your bags. I won the lottery!'

The husband said, 'Oh my God! What should I pack, beach stuff or mountain stuff?'

'Doesn't matter,' she said. 'Just get out.'

'Can you read this?' the optician asked.

'Read it?' the Polish guy replied, 'I know the guy.'

A wife was making a breakfast of fried eggs for her husband.

Suddenly, her husband burst into the kitchen.

'Careful,' he said, 'CAREFUL! Put in some more butter! Oh, my gosh! You're cooking too many at once. TOO MANY! Turn them! TURN THEM NOW! We need more butter. Oh, my gosh! WHERE are we going to get MORE BUTTER? They're going to STICK! CAREFUL! I said be CAREFUL! You NEVER listen to me when you're cooking! Never! Turn them! Hurry up! Are you CRAZY? Have you LOST your mind? Don't forget to salt them. You know you always forget to salt them Use the salt. USE THE SALT! THE SALT!'

The wife stared at him.

'What in the world is wrong with you? You think I don't know how to fry a couple of eggs?'

The husband calmly replied, 'I just wanted to show you what it feels like when I'm driving.'

This week’s Cajun Corner should be filled more with pictures than words.  It should, but you know that isn’t going to happen.

I sure hope every one of you and your families had a wonderful Christmas.  The week before Christmas, my son, Hank, called daily to see if his package arrived yet.  When it finally arrived we put the box under the tree.  Hank called, “You have to open the box.  I have to explain something.”  So, we opened the box expecting wrapped presents.  Oh no, there were two beautiful housecoats in the box.  What did he have to explain?  He just wanted us to know that the black one is for dad and the white one for mom.  That little dickens just couldn’t wait. But that’s not all.  He received our package and delivered presents to everyone on the spot – without waiting for Christmas.

I must admit that Hank takes after his mother.  For a long time I’ve said we need pre-Christmas presents.  Further, I think that is probably why advent calendars were started with gifts for the 12 days before Christmas.

Although this season, thank God, has been very busy with work, we did enjoy a pleasant dinner with friends early in the season, after the Christmas parade.  She had a bit of an accident early in November on her bicycle and we all teased that she should have training wheels.  Guess what we gave her for Christmas?  Yes, training wheels.

Early in the season was the SOB (Sisters of the Beach) brunch which, as usual, was a hoot. The Wednesday night Mental Health Night a/k/a MHN girls had a wonderful Christmas party.  The Nereids also had a fabulous Christmas slumber party.

Since the girls were all too busy to meet on the Wednesdays after the MHN Christmas party, George and I took one Wednesday night and went to Tippy’s Tavern for their prime rib dinner.  OMG!  It was fabulous.

Cajun Stitchery’s studio was decked out for Christmas.  Hopefully, it will be more decked out in years to come but I was very pleased this year.  Since the front door opens into the “living room,” we turned the living room into a show place for our wares, complete with Christmas tree.  Each day the Christmas lights were turned on for customers to enjoy.  As you walk through the front “show” room, through the kitchen and into our work room, we looked like Santa’s workshop.  Every stage of orders were hanging and stacked everywhere.  It was great! Thanks to our local radio station, Christmas music played constantly throughout the season.  I made a red Santa Sack with zebra print fur at the top.  That Santa Sack carried beads through the Christmas parade.  It carried presents and a change of clothes to the Nereid slumber party.  It was displayed in our workshop and finally was filled with George’s Christmas presents and placed under our tree for the big day.

During the season we had several repeat customers as well as new customers.  All are my friends now.  There were a lot of names embroidered on stockings; monograms on shirts; logos on jackets, and all sorts of wonderful gifts and embroidery.

On top of that, Etsy was booming. I got so tickled because I have an Etsy widget loaded on my android and every time we had a sale, I could hear “cha-ching” from my phone.  At first it kind of startled me.  Later I learned to love the cha-ching sound.  We sold Christmas items, mermaid stocking, laundry bags, placemats, and all sorts of thing.  The best seller, by far, were the handkerchiefs.  Some were for wedding showers and some for mothers and mother-in-laws.  Several of the handkerchiefs were monogrammed and several were not.  Oddly, none of the booger hankies were sold.  I guess that fad is over.  However, lace is certainly in.  This was by far the best Christmas season our little Etsy store has ever had.

We normally take down the Christmas decorations on George’s birthday, January 2nd.  This year the decorations were put away the day after Christmas.  Insofar as Cajun Stitchery is concerned, we need to move onto the next season … MARDI GRAS.  I have begun decorating but more needs to be done.  I’m taking this week between Christmas and New Years to build up our Etsy stock and fill more orders that are still coming in.  Yes, we already have krewe jackets to embroider.

In building up the Etsy stock, the first line of business is mermaids.  There are some beautiful new mermaid items available already.

I have created a new baby bib design made on the embroidery machine.  This design has scalloped edges and is much more girly and heirloom looking than the other rectangular design.  The new bibs have not been listed yet.  In fact, I haven’t even taken pictures of them.  That will come in a later issue.  But remember the problem I had figuring out what to suggest for baby showers.  We have that under control now.

This is the week for making resolutions and I’m working hard on that, too.

HAPPY
NEW YEAR

Thank you Bob for the following:

Mr. Johnson was overweight, so his doctor put him on a diet. He said; "I want you to eat regularly for two days, then skip a day, and repeat this procedure for two weeks. The next time I see you, you should have lost at least five pounds." When Mr. Johnson returned, he shocked the doctor by having dropped almost twenty pounds. "Why, that's amazing!" the doctor told him. "You did this just by following my instructions?" The slimmed down Mr. Johnson nodded. "I'll tell you, though, I thought I was going to drop dead that third day." "From hunger, you mean?" "No," replied Mr. Johnson, "from skipping."

So sorry that I took last week off from Cajun Corner.  Between parties and working there was no time remaining.  We have embroidered some beautiful items and there are more to do this week.  Since I love to embroider, suffice it to say I am having a wonderful time.

A few years back we did tea towels with a beachy Santa.  Thought I would do another and as I was going through some designs, I ran across a whole series of beachy Santas.  These are smaller than the other one but so cute.  I loaded one of the beachy Santas into the embroidery machine and thought I would make one for a friend. After that was done, I decided to make one for the shop.  I made 3 in all and had to stop when a customer arrived.  As soon as she saw the beachy Santa, she asked how much and bought 2 right on the spot – still damp.  We now have one on Etsy and several more at the studio.  They really are adorable and we can, of course, add a monogram to make the towel extra special.  The customer who bought the 2 towels said that these were perfect for those last minute gifts to friends and hostess gifts.

Of course, the Christmas stockings have been arriving. Everyone has a stocking that needs a name.  Last Friday I was going to close the shop early because there was a party that evening.  A gentleman called and needed names on a couple of stockings.  Of course, he needed them done that day because the family was having the family portrait done on Saturday and the stockings needed to be hanging from the mantel.  We closed a bit later than anticipated but still in enough time to enjoy the party.

We’ve had several repeat customers, which always makes me smile because it means they like my work.  This week we are working on a few logos and names on shirts, as well as satin jackets.

I cannot forget my own family.  I stitched out a couple of really cute Disney designs for Kayla and a sham for my son.  Everything should be mailed later this week.

HAVE A wonderful week

Thank you Bob for the following:

An elderly couple were sitting outdoors at a cafe when they noticed an old man who seemed to be having trouble crossing the street with an ungainly shuffle. The man said to his wife "He surely has bad arthritis to walk like that." His wife replied "No, that's definitely old time rheumatism." They couldn't agree so the man decided to ask the old man. He walked over to him and said "Excuse me, sir, but my wife and I saw you having difficulty crossing the street and I told her that you have arthritis but she insisted that you have rheumatism. Which one of us was wrong?" The old man said "The three of us were wrong." "Three of us were wrong? How so?" asked the man to which the old man replied "You were wrong when you said I had arthritis and your wife was wrong when she said I had rheumatism and I was wrong when I thought I had to pass gas."

This farmer had a wife who nagged him all the time. One day while he was outside plowing the field, she came out and started nagging him. While she was doing this, the mule kicked her and she died. At the funeral, the ladies came up and talked to the farmer. The farmer nodded his head "yes". The men came up and talked to him and the farmer nodded his head "no". Well this other man wondered why he nodded his head "yes" to the ladies and "no" to the men. Then, he went up to the farmer and asked him why. The farmer replied, "Well, when the ladies came up, they told me how pretty my wife's dress was and how pretty she looked. When the men came up, they asked, "That mule for sale?"

A pregnant woman gets into a car accident and falls into a deep coma. Asleep for nearly six months, she wakes up and sees that she is no longer pregnant. Frantically, she asks the doctor about her baby. The doctor replies, "Ma'am, you had twins! A boy and a girl. The babies are fine. Your brother came in and named them." The woman thinks to herself, "Oh no, not my brother - he's an idiot!" Expecting the worst, she asks the doctor, "Well, what's the girl's name?" "Denise," the doctor says. The new mother thinks, "Wow, that's not a bad name! Guess I was wrong about my brother. I like Denise!" Then she asks the doctor, "What's the boy's name?" The doctor replies, "DeNephew."

Two ladies were hanging out together and one was depressed. "What's wrong?" The depressed one replied, "I've been married four times and every one of my husbands has passed away." The other lady asked, "What did they used to do?" The depressed lady replied, "Well, my first husband was a millionaire, the second was a magician, the third was an evangelist, and the fourth was a mortician." And the other said, "Oh, one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go."

Four high school boys afflicted with spring fever skipped morning classes. After lunch they reported to the teacher that they had a flat tire. Much to their relief she smiled and said: "Well, you missed a test today so take seats apart from one another and take out a piece of paper." Still smiling, she waited for them to sit down. Then she said: "First Question (100 points): Which tire was flat?"
