It's Already Fall

It's Already Fall

I'm so bad about keeping up with this blog.

It's been 8 months since I last posted anything.

That doesn't mean I haven't been busy.  Just to prove it, I'm adding several items that Cajun Stitchery has worked on this year.

These pictures are definitely not all inclusive.  The machine has been busy this year.

Since last year I've been trying to digitize a Pensacola Beach design for each holiday.  I think that's been pretty much accomplished.

I did the Pensacola Beach Ball and the Pensacola Beach sign for Mardi Gras.  Turned out that lots of people loved the Pensacola Beach Ball but only a few cared for the Pensacola Beach sign.  So, I stuck with the Pensacola Beach Ball.

This little Nutcracker tee shirt was special.  A customer contacted me on Facebook to do this.  She purchased the tee shirt online and had it delivered to me.  I did the embroidery and shipped it to her.  She paid with PayPal.  That was one of the coolest orders I've ever had.  The project just worked perfectly.

I digitized this crawfish awhile back and listed it in the Etsy Store as a digitized design for other embroiderers.  A potential customer contacted me recently wanting a patch with this design and "Crawdad" printed on the claw.  The potential customer never purchased it but I liked the design so much that I have it listed for sale on Etsy.

I made another USA flag quilt this year out of scrap fabric for my husband.  It really turned out nice, used up a bunch of my scrap fabric, and he loves it.  Yes, that's the Pledge of Allegiance stitched on the edges.

And then I started working on aprons.  Just because I wanted to do so.  Then I purchased waaay too much satin fabric in a myriad of colors.  But it makes me happy.

There is a special spot in my heart for the bridges-to-be who contact me.  From robes to handkerchiefs to anything needed to be embroidered for weddings.  I just love doing this.
Until next time

This has been a very rough week.  Most of the Labor Day weekend was spent working on a rush order for a left chest logo that was needed on Monday.  Tuesday was going to be our Labor Day holiday.  When Tuesday arrived I received a disturbing call from one of my Nereid sisters telling me that one of our youngest members was in the hospital.  She suffered from a cardiac arrest Monday morning and had been in an induced coma ever since because of the time she went without oxygen to her brain caused swelling in her brain.  I sat at the hospital on Tuesday with the family and one of my fine finned sisters.  Although she was still in a coma, the medical staff was bringing her out of the coma.  I was able to visit with her, although she was still comatose.  The medical staff brought her out of the coma on Wednesday morning and the neurologist was able to perform an EEG which revealed a complete lack of brain activity.  Since one of her brothers suffered from kidney failure and was on dialysis, the family decided that her kidneys should be donated to him.  The protocol for that procedure took a day or two and turned out that they were not a match.  The family then decided that her kidneys, and other salvageable organs would be donated and she would be able to help at least 3 additional people.  She was taken off of life support this past Friday at noon.
Needless to say work was not a top priority this week.

A few orders did come in from our Etsy store which, of course, were filled and shipped.
This weekend I have gone through all of the items in our Etsy store and placed 94 items in a Sale category.  A lot of the sale items are marked down at least 50%.  If you are looking for Christmas gifts and stocking stuffers, please browse around the store.
This year we have had a few issues with the post office not delivering our items.  The only way I know to track through the mail is via priority mail.  The policies in our Etsy store have changed.  The default is 3 day priority mail, and first class mail upon request.  Shipping to Canada remains the same, first class mail, because priority mail is outrageously expensive to Canada.

Another addition to our Etsy store are a few fall and Halloween items.  Only a couple of Christmas items have been listed at this time but I do plan to list more.
All in all, I just want to get rid of the old stuff in order to make room for newly created new stuff.  As always, I am open to ideas and critiques.  So, bring it on.  What do you like about the shop and your shopping experience?  What don’t you like?  Got any ideas on improvements?
George found two old dining chairs that were left over from the previous homeowner or somehow got in our garage.  He took the seats off and painted the chairs white, at my request.  I plan to recover the seats with, of course, embroidery.  I just have to decide on the design.  You can never have too much seating.
Last year I was looking for large bolts of fabric to make curtains for the studio.  I found an online site out of New York that seemed to have what I needed.  All I wanted was plain, white muslin.  I purchased 100 yards of plain, white muslin and received a fabric that did not appear to be muslin.  It turned out that it was 100% polyester muslin.  That was pretty difficult for me to understand.  In my mind, muslin is a 100% cotton fabric.  I went back to the site and found they offer 100% cotton muslin and 100% polyester muslin.  After a little research I found that you can purchase about any kind of fabric you want in polyester or a poly-blend.  The polyester fabric is, of course, cheap.  The truth is that I’ve just about used up my 100 yards of white polyester muslin on a myriad of items.  It is strong but doesn’t have the nice cotton feel to it.  However, it goes against my “all natural” side.  I later purchased 75 yards of 100% cotton, red muslin from the same company and I am satisfied with that purchase.  I really like the company because although they are the middle man, they state that they purchase only from mills in the USA.  Their fabric is all made here.
The same issue appeared recently when I purchased chiffon scarves from a different wholesaler.  The caption stated that they were 100% chiffon.  When they arrived, I found them to have the same feel as chiffon.  The tag says “100% poly – Made in China.”  I suppose they are 100% poly-chiffon.

Natural Nail Polish Remover:

Pour equal parts vinegar and lemon juice into a small bowl and soak a few cotton balls in mixture. Meanwhile, soak your hands in a basin of warm water for 10 minutes to loosen the polish a bit. Apply the cotton balls on the nail and leave on for 20-30 seconds. Wipe off the polish gently. Repeat if needed.

I guess that’s one FaceBook friend down.  I have all of these 4,000+ FaceBook friends and today I’ve been messaging one of them and she me, back and forth.  In response to her last message I suppose I got a bit over zealous in responding and wrote a very long response.  After I sent the message, I noticed she got off of FaceBook.  Why oh why can’t I say anything briefly?

The Mermaid Room is looking better now.  The curtains are not exactly as I imagined they would turn out, but they will do for now.  There are just so many projects and decorating to do in that house.

We embroidered some adorable Halloween flour sack towels this week.  Mermaids were required and I saw this really cute artwork of a witch mermaid riding on a trident in front of the moon.  The digitizing was done and the Happy Halloween was a stock design.  It was all put together and turned out pretty darn cute.

On Friday the federal court called with a message that they don’t need me for jury duty on Monday.  So, it is back to work on Monday for me.

Windows 8 is a piece of cake.  At first we were leery about it because the periodicals said it is so different from Windows 7.  However, you can turn the screen into the Windows 7 screen.  The functions are a bit different.  Everything seems to take an extra step to do, but it really isn’t that difficult.  Of course, the internet is the same.

The plumbing in the green house a/k/a Studio still isn’t working perfectly.  Our handyman was called and after using his 30 foot auger, decided that the septic tank needs to be drained.  Those people are coming on Tuesday.  Oh hurray.  Hope that works.

HAPPY HALLOWEEN

Thank you Bob for the following:

I hate it when old people poke me at wedding and say "You're next!"   So I have started doing the same thing at funerals.

Politicians and diapers have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

A lawyer returns to his parked BMW to find the head lights broken and considerable damage. Theres no sign of the offending vehicle but he's relieved to see that there is a note stuck under the windshield wiper. " Sorry. I just backed into your Beemer. The witnesses who saw the accident are nodding and smiling at me because they think I'm leaving my name, address and other particulars. But I'm not."

"If there are any idiots in the room, will they please stand up" said the sarcastic teacher. After a long silence, one freshman rose to his feet. "Now then mister, why do you consider yourself an idiot?" enquired the teacher with sneer. "Well, actually I don't," said the student, "but I hate to see you standing up there all by yourself."

Fred and his wife Edna went to the state fair every year. Every year Fred would say, "Edna, Id like to ride in that there airplane." And every year Edna would say, "I know Fred, but that airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars." One year Fred and Edna went to the fair and Fred said, "Edna, Im 71 years old. If I dont ride that airplane this year I may never get another chance." Edna replied, "Fred that there airplane ride costs ten dollars, and ten dollars is ten dollars." The pilot overheard them and said, "Folks, Ill make you a deal. I'll take you both up for a ride. If you can stay quiet for the entire ride and not say one word, I won't charge you, but if you say one word it's ten dollars." Fred and Edna agreed and up they go. The pilot does all kinds of twists and turns, rolls and dives, but not a word is heard. He does all his tricks over again, but still not a word. They land and the pilot turns to Fred, "By golly, I did everything could think of to get you to yell out, but you didn't." Fred replied, "Well, I was gonna say something when Edna fell out, but ten dollars is ten dollars."

About mid-week TS Karen was noticed as a potential weather issue for the Gulf Coast.  People in our area prepared.  I know this because the stores were crowded, cases of water were displayed, and the stores were starting to run out of the essentials.  Still Karen was a tropical storm, not a hurricane.  As the week progressed there were threats of Karen becoming a hurricane.  Jim Cantore arrived on Pensacola Beach, which is never a good sign.  However, after a lot of praying Karen simply became disorganized.  This morning was the first sign of rain in the Pensacola area and so far it has only been a few drops now and then.  The weather alerts have dwindled to only alerts for rip currents.  Rain should arrive today.  The forecast for tomorrow is sunshine.  As Shakespeare said, “Much ado about nothing.”

This past week was a light work week.  When the time is available it is always a good thing to prepare for the upcoming seasons.  There is always so much to do.

The peacock pillow was stitched out and looks great.  The design is a bit smaller than our usual designs though.  Nevertheless, it is beautiful.  The mermaid design has not been completed.

The living room/entrance room in the studio house is pretty empty.  The idea was to create an embroidery display room.  Displaying is not as easy as originally thought.  Searches on Pinterest for display ideas have produced many ideas.  Since we already have a few sheets of foam board, triangles were cut from the foam board and attached to each other to create a Christmas tree, in an abstract kind of way.  The various embroidered Christmas ornaments that have been made were pinned to the tree.  It kind of looks nice.  There is more room on the tree for additional ornaments, even after embroidering lots of lace ornaments.

It was surprising to find how many ornament designs we have.  Most of the ornaments are lace.  Lace embroidery always means lots and lots of stitches.  No doubt it is beautiful but since embroidery is priced per thousand stitches, the stitch count becomes very important.  We definitely want our customers to have beautifully embroidered items but that is always weighed with stitch count.  The customer needs to get the most bang for their bucks.  One way of doing that is keeping the shape of the design but using more of an appliqué technique.  There are several lace designs in our repertoire that are intriguing but have not been stitched out yet.

Looking at the Christmas designs and stitching them out gave me the bright idea to look online at some websites that haven’t been visited in a long time.  I used to be on top of all of the home embroidery designs and techniques.  OMG!  The home embroiderers are so creative and talented.  It only took viewing a few pages of some of these websites to get the creative juices flowing.

One of the first things that hit is that I’m working on Christmas and don’t have the studio decorated for Halloween.  Perusing our designs and searching for pumpkins, I did find some appliquéd pumpkins but they weren’t what I wanted.  There was one pumpkin design done in red work that really jumped out.  I took the design, increased it to 8” and created an appliqué from the outline.

Although I believe the home embroiderers are leaps and bounds beyond the commercial embroiderer in ideas, there is one shortcoming.  That is that most home embroiderers are limited to the largest hoop size their machine will hold, which is usually 5”x7”.  Just because their hoop is 5x7 does not mean that they can embroider a 5x7 design.  There must be a margin on all 4 sides.  In practical application this means their largest design could not be larger than 4x6, and that is stretching it.  If they want to make something larger than their hoop, it becomes continuous embroidery.  They usually just make everything fit into their hoop.  When it comes to things like pot holders, the designs are too small.  We have hoops much larger than 5”x7” and can make items the appropriate size.  A pot holder should be about 8” square.  That is not possible in a 5x7 hoop, but is perfect for my 12” square hoop.  As with all designs, once the design is created, there are a few trial runs to tweak the design.  Our hot pads and pot holders are turning out adorable.

There was excitement in our Etsy store this week.  A lady requested two custom made lace handkerchiefs just like the beige and white one that is listed.  We created a custom order for her but she never paid and the hankies were never sent.  She said she needed them by Friday or Saturday.  The due date is over so that turned out a no sale.  On the bright side, now we have 3 of the beige and white lace handkerchiefs.

Last night George took me out on a date to the beach for the Pensacola Beach Song Writers’ Festival.  We went to our usual Paradise Bar & Grill, drank Bushwhackers, and listened to some great music.  We ran into several friends.  All in all it was a pretty wonderful evening.  The weather was beautiful.  There just is nothing like the beach, music, drinks, and friends.

Have a wonderful week

Four surgeons are comparing the type of patients they consider the easiest to operate on. The first surgeon says, "I like to operate on electricians, because when you open them up everything is color coded." The second surgeon says, "I prefer to operate on accountants, because when you open them up everything is numbered." The third surgeon says, "I think librarians are the easiest to operate on because everything inside them is in alphabetic order." The fourth surgeon says, "I've got you all beat. I like to operate on politicians best. They are by far the easiest because they have no guts, no heart, no spine and their head and behind interchangeable."

Usually George dresses in costume to hand out candy to trick or treater’s.  This year he really didn’t feel like doing that until a neighbor asked if he was going to use the same costume as last year.  He got out his old black poncho and hat from last year and found a really scary foam mask at Wal-Mart.  He even scared me.  Then he sat outside by the bushes with his cauldron of candy.

It was still light outside and there were a couple of women strolling a baby around the park.  I had my witch’s hat on and was setting George up.  Apparently the ladies didn’t see George moving around and thought that he was something that I constructed and put in the yard.  About their third time around, the ladies and baby strolled over to tell me that they had been watching me set up for Halloween.  They thought the monster/creature was really cool and we all laughed – until George moved and scared the bejeebers out of the ladies and child.  We had fun that night.  There were more than the usual number of children but not a lot.  Our neighbors were handing out candy and it was nice mingling with them.  All in all, we were inside by 8 p.m.

Our usual tradition is afterwards we stoke up a fire in the chiminea and enjoy a glass of wine.  This year was no different.

The following day, of course, was my birthday.  By the end of the day, I had over 400 birthday wishes on Facebook.  I love my Facebook friends.  One friend later told me that she was late getting on FB to send me a Happy Birthday wish.  When she did, she got a message that my Facebook page was full and she couldn’t place the message.  I didn’t know they did that.

The day was pretty quiet and peaceful.  I had some embroidery work to do.  George gave me a great present.  I walked into my studio to find a new, adjustable, swivel, and rolling chair, with a back on it, placed at my embroidery machine.  Very nice.

I told George that I would like a steak dinner.  He cooked a wonderful meal and afterwards we relaxed, with wine, in front of the chiminea.  Obviously, the chiminea is one of my favorite places.

This may not seem like a very exciting birthday, but George understands that I don’t celebrate a birthDAY.  Oh no, my celebration entails a birthMONTH.  We have to pace ourselves.

Saturday we attended the memorial services for our friend who passed away recently.  It really was a lovely service.  Tears were flowing.  A good friend will be missed.  The memorial was at the Elks Lodge on the beach.  After the service everyone went to the food and bar.  We visited with many friends.  Many thanks go out to our wonderful SOB ladies who planned, prepared, hosted, and cleaned for this memorial to a wonderful man.

Hurricane Sandy killed 11 people in Cuba and proceeded along its path north until it collided into 2 additional storms and hit New York and the surrounding areas.  It was only a category one hurricane, but the combination with the other storms and hitting in the location that it did, was devastating.  Our thoughts and prayers have been with all of those people.  Sandy closed down New York City.  We watched the news and all of the photos on the internet.   Memories of Hurricane Ivan kept flooding our thoughts.

A friend of mine posted a question on Facebook today:  “How long would you survive where you live if utilities and transportation STOPPED? No water, sewer, electricity or food coming to the stores?”  Interesting questions.  I don’t think we would have too hard a time.  In Florida you can always dig for water.  It is there.  The garden and knowing what plants are edible would suffice for food, not to mention fishing and seafood.  We even have the bamboo that we could use for fishing poles.  If there is nothing to buy at the store, there is little need for transportation other than walking or bicycling.  I even have my grandmother’s treadle sewing machine.  Aside from fire, there is solar cooking and heating.  Our big problem would be cooling and finding coffee.  The biggest problem, I think, would be crime.    People who do not know how to survive tend to loot.

This week I have spent hours surfing the web and scouring Pinterest for handmade Christmas gift ideas.  Good gosh, the internet has tutorials on everything.  If you don’t like to read a tutorial, there are plenty of tutorial videos available.  There is no need to ever throw away fabric or paper.  The internet is littered with uses for these.  Aluminum cans have a million recycled purposes, as well.   There are all kinds of craft projects using plastic of every kind.  If that’s not good enough, there are crafts projects for organizing all of these craft supplies.  It is just so amazing what the internet has done for everyone.

With that said, it is time to be thinking of Christmas presents.  What to make?  What to purchase?

·         Cookies, cakes, fudge, bread, etc., are always wonderful gifts.  Print out the recipe on pretty cardstock and tie with a nice bow.

·         Do a theme present such as kitchenware.  Buy or make a potholder mitt and fill it with wooden spoons, whisk, spatula, etc.  Tie a pretty bow around the middle.

·         A set of napkins with pretty napkin rings.  These are easily made and there are many tutorials online with a wealth of design ideas.

·         I recently saw a cute idea.  Place settings for the table included a burlap pocket with a flower on top.  The silverware was inserted into the burlap pocket and all was placed on top of the napkin.

·         Burlap, muslin and linen with their earth tones are very popular right now.

·         Cool looking spice dispensers.

·         Garden apron with packets of seeds in the pockets.

·         A basket for the garden with a handle, insert seeds or plants, gloves, potting soil, fertilizer, seedling pots, small hoes or rakes and garden utensils.  Even an outdoor thermometer or rain gauge.

·         Soaps, bath salts, scrub cloth, towel, lotions, etc.

Yesterday a lady contacted me for heirloom looking handkerchiefs for her Nana’s birthday.  Of course, they were made and initialed in the corner using a small diamond shaped monogram.  They looked very nice and the customer was please with the results and that we could get this done so fast.

Have a wonderful week.
