Cajun Corner - March 16, 2016

One of the most difficult techniques for me to learn in machine embroidery was to embroider with metallic thread.  There have been some very frustrating moments where I had to just walk away from it.  Over the years, thank goodness, I have learned.  The trick is to loosen your upper tension, slow the machine down, and put your thread on a stand or in a cup on the other side of the room.  Yes, you will still get some thread breaks but much less.

All of that said, I have fallen in love with gold work, silver work, and the look of a shimmering metallic design.  In fact, yesterday I made two black shams with gold metallic dragons.  Here are some pictures:

Remember when making shams, make them one or two inches smaller than the pillow insert in order for the insert to fill the sham to capacity for a better look and fit.

Have a great day.

It has been nice this week walking next door to work.  Working in a large room with good lighting and lots of space to spread out is a dream come true.  The creative juices are flowing.  There is a separate room for cutting, sewing, and storage.  George put peg boards up for my thread.  The problem is that it is hard leaving and coming home.

Last week we took the dogs for their annual check-up, shots, license, etc.  They are both healthy.  Sam is keeping Evie moving.  She is in real good shape for a 13 year old Labrador retriever.  The vet, Dr. Armani, was surprised at Evie’s good heath.  He was more surprised at the size of Sam.  The last time Sam was at the vet’s he was 40 pounds.  He weighed in at a whopping 80 pounds last week.  And, he is NOT overweight.

Date night turned out to be Friday night.  We got some Chinese take-out and a new movie and enjoyed the evening at the Cajun Stitchery house.  The movie was the life story of Coco Chanel and starred Shirley McClain.  I’ve always loved the rags to riches story of Coco Chanel.  She was a very tenacious woman.  I also like the clean lines of her designs, her little black dress, and what she did with jersey.

While browsing through some designs, I saw some that I’ve never stitched and just wanted to stitch the designs.  They were horses and created in black work.  Several people commented on Facebook about how pretty the designs were.  I think I’m going to make placemats out of them.  In the meantime, I made some coasters out of one of the designs.  While working on the coasters, I made some butterfly coasters.

Not being able to upload my photos onto Etsy was very frustrating until I had the bright idea of trying to do it on Google Chrome.  The uploading worked perfectly using Google Chrome.  So, I decided to list the 2 new handkerchiefs.  I got as far as the pictures and realized that I’ve already sold those hankies.  I had nothing to list.  Now I plan on listing the horse and butterfly coasters.  I need to make more things to list in the Etsy store because we have had several sales lately.  It never ceases to surprise me what people will buy.  The “You Have A Booger” hankies still seems to be a hot item.

George has been working on the lawn and garden and we are planning several fun things for the yard.

Ever have a craving for a special food?  George did.  He was craving boiled shrimp.  Yesterday he went to Joe Patti’s and bought 10 pounds of Gulf shrimp.  Wow!  That’s how much I buy when we have guests over.  The shrimp were boiled and we ate our fill, and peeled the rest.  We froze some and have some left over in the frig for snacking.

Have a wonderful week.

You’ll need:  1 yard nylon tulle and strong thread

These Bath tub scrubs are much like a body puff except these are for scrubbing the bath tub clean.

Using your tulle lay it out flat and turn over a hem of 5 inches, keep folding it over in 5 inch sections till it is completely folded into a long 5 inch wide pile of tulle.

Pin it to secure and using a strong thread sew the middle of the length together tightly.

Cut the edges of the length to remove and folds and using a running/gathering stitch sew from one end to the other.

Draw up the tulle into a puff that fits into your hand and secure with stitches. Pull the puff around to open up the layers and to create a nice circular puff. Trim it into a ball with some sharp scissors.

Use this puff for cleaning and scrubbing your bath.

Usually George dresses in costume to hand out candy to trick or treater’s.  This year he really didn’t feel like doing that until a neighbor asked if he was going to use the same costume as last year.  He got out his old black poncho and hat from last year and found a really scary foam mask at Wal-Mart.  He even scared me.  Then he sat outside by the bushes with his cauldron of candy.

It was still light outside and there were a couple of women strolling a baby around the park.  I had my witch’s hat on and was setting George up.  Apparently the ladies didn’t see George moving around and thought that he was something that I constructed and put in the yard.  About their third time around, the ladies and baby strolled over to tell me that they had been watching me set up for Halloween.  They thought the monster/creature was really cool and we all laughed – until George moved and scared the bejeebers out of the ladies and child.  We had fun that night.  There were more than the usual number of children but not a lot.  Our neighbors were handing out candy and it was nice mingling with them.  All in all, we were inside by 8 p.m.

Our usual tradition is afterwards we stoke up a fire in the chiminea and enjoy a glass of wine.  This year was no different.

The following day, of course, was my birthday.  By the end of the day, I had over 400 birthday wishes on Facebook.  I love my Facebook friends.  One friend later told me that she was late getting on FB to send me a Happy Birthday wish.  When she did, she got a message that my Facebook page was full and she couldn’t place the message.  I didn’t know they did that.

The day was pretty quiet and peaceful.  I had some embroidery work to do.  George gave me a great present.  I walked into my studio to find a new, adjustable, swivel, and rolling chair, with a back on it, placed at my embroidery machine.  Very nice.

I told George that I would like a steak dinner.  He cooked a wonderful meal and afterwards we relaxed, with wine, in front of the chiminea.  Obviously, the chiminea is one of my favorite places.

This may not seem like a very exciting birthday, but George understands that I don’t celebrate a birthDAY.  Oh no, my celebration entails a birthMONTH.  We have to pace ourselves.

Saturday we attended the memorial services for our friend who passed away recently.  It really was a lovely service.  Tears were flowing.  A good friend will be missed.  The memorial was at the Elks Lodge on the beach.  After the service everyone went to the food and bar.  We visited with many friends.  Many thanks go out to our wonderful SOB ladies who planned, prepared, hosted, and cleaned for this memorial to a wonderful man.

Hurricane Sandy killed 11 people in Cuba and proceeded along its path north until it collided into 2 additional storms and hit New York and the surrounding areas.  It was only a category one hurricane, but the combination with the other storms and hitting in the location that it did, was devastating.  Our thoughts and prayers have been with all of those people.  Sandy closed down New York City.  We watched the news and all of the photos on the internet.   Memories of Hurricane Ivan kept flooding our thoughts.

A friend of mine posted a question on Facebook today:  How long would you survive where you live if utilities and transportation STOPPED? No water, sewer, electricity or food coming to the stores?”  Interesting questions.  I don’t think we would have too hard a time.  In Florida you can always dig for water.  It is there.  The garden and knowing what plants are edible would suffice for food, not to mention fishing and seafood.  We even have the bamboo that we could use for fishing poles.  If there is nothing to buy at the store, there is little need for transportation other than walking or bicycling.  I even have my grandmother’s treadle sewing machine.  Aside from fire, there is solar cooking and heating.  Our big problem would be cooling and finding coffee.  The biggest problem, I think, would be crime.    People who do not know how to survive tend to loot.

This week I have spent hours surfing the web and scouring Pinterest for handmade Christmas gift ideas.  Good gosh, the internet has tutorials on everything.  If you don’t like to read a tutorial, there are plenty of tutorial videos available.  There is no need to ever throw away fabric or paper.  The internet is littered with uses for these.  Aluminum cans have a million recycled purposes, as well.   There are all kinds of craft projects using plastic of every kind.  If that’s not good enough, there are crafts projects for organizing all of these craft supplies.  It is just so amazing what the internet has done for everyone.

With that said, it is time to be thinking of Christmas presents.  What to make?  What to purchase?

·         Cookies, cakes, fudge, bread, etc., are always wonderful gifts.  Print out the recipe on pretty cardstock and tie with a nice bow.

·         Do a theme present such as kitchenware.  Buy or make a potholder mitt and fill it with wooden spoons, whisk, spatula, etc.  Tie a pretty bow around the middle.

·         A set of napkins with pretty napkin rings.  These are easily made and there are many tutorials online with a wealth of design ideas.

·         I recently saw a cute idea.  Place settings for the table included a burlap pocket with a flower on top.  The silverware was inserted into the burlap pocket and all was placed on top of the napkin.

·         Burlap, muslin and linen with their earth tones are very popular right now.

·         Cool looking spice dispensers.

·         Garden apron with packets of seeds in the pockets.

·         A basket for the garden with a handle, insert seeds or plants, gloves, potting soil, fertilizer, seedling pots, small hoes or rakes and garden utensils.  Even an outdoor thermometer or rain gauge.

·         Soaps, bath salts, scrub cloth, towel, lotions, etc.

Yesterday a lady contacted me for heirloom looking handkerchiefs for her Nana’s birthday.  Of course, they were made and initialed in the corner using a small diamond shaped monogram.  They looked very nice and the customer was please with the results and that we could get this done so fast.

Have a wonderful week.

Christmas Stocking Tutorial

Since I wrote on Friday about creating the in-the-hoop design for the Christmas Elf Stocking I have been embellishing and making more.  This post is about these stockings.

I started out digitizing a basic stocking shape with the curly toe.  The top was left open.  I used a single stitch outline.  My plan was to hoop some tear away stabilizer in one of my largest hoops.  Then I would lay the fabric on top of the stabilizer, unhooped with the fold of the fabric across the top of the stocking, and let the first round of stitches outline the stocking.  The next thing that stitched would be whatever design that was going to be on the front of the stocking.  I chose a single color ornament design.  Then I would lay the next layer of fabric over the first layer, fold of the fabric across the top of the stocking, and let the outline stitch again.  Everything worked as planned.  I was able to pull the fabric away from the tear away stabilizer, trim the fabric around the stocking stitching and turn the stocking right side out.  It looked nice but was a bit small, and I noticed that I had not attached a loop for hanging the stocking.

Back to the drawing board.  I have a regular, red and white, fuzzy stocking that I bought as a standard for comparison purposes.  Through the next few tweaks with the digitizing program, I was able to enlarge the stocking to fit the hoop.  The hoop that I'm using is actual 16 1/2" x 11", but I cannot use all of that space because the corners are rounded.  The stocking ends up about 8" wide and 12" or 13" long because it's being made inside out.  Measuring the elf stocking against the standard stocking shows that the final is only slightly smaller than the standard.   The design was finalized and there were 3 stockings constructed during the tweaking phase.

Since I had more of the golden colored fabric, I made two more stockings in the final design, one with candles and a poinsettia and one with candy canes.  They turned out very nice.  That is pretty much where I was when I last wrote.  I realized that I would need to figure out how to make a cuff and embellishments.

That is what I've been working on this weekend.  I had used all of the golden fabric but I did have scrap pieces remaining.  I thought if I could make a row of small, one inch, designs, on the folded golden fabric pieces, fold at the bottom, I could attach the row of designs to the top of the stocking.  It worked perfectly.  By placing the right side of the cuff to the wrong side of the stocking, I sewed around the top edge.  Then I placed the loop at the seam, loop side inside the stocking, and stitched loop and cuff straight up to finish off the cuff.  The cuff was then folded outside the stocking and it was done.  It looked very nice.  I have since thought that if I need to make the stocking longer, I could simply make the cuff longer and fold the cuff outside at a higher place.  I haven't tried that yet.

Once all of the cuffs were done, the stockings looked real cute but still needed something.  So, I got out my rhinestones and began applying them on the stockings.  They turned out adorable.  The only one that I didn't put rhinestones on was the candy cane stocking.  I would be concerned if a child swallowed a loose rhinestone.  I'm still thinking that there should be something on the toe of the stocking.  Maybe a little jingle bell, but I'm not sure at this point.

Today, I was looking around in my studio and found a piece of black satin fabric.  Since so many people around here love fleur de lis, I thought I would make a stocking in black satin with a gold fleur de lis.  I only had enough black satin for the outside of the stocking.  Instead of having a double layer of fabric with the fold at the top, I used a double layer of gold jersey with the fold at the top and then laid the black satin on top of the gold jersey and folding the top down a few inchs.  The outline and design were stitched and then a second layer of the black satin, folded at the top a few inches, with a double layer of gold jersey on top of that.  Then the design finished.  This worked out beautifully.  In fact, at this time I realized that using the double layer of jersey gave the stocking a bit of thickness that was lacking in the other stockings.  I used some of the scrap black satin fabric to make the cuff.  This cuff was made with a 2 inch fleur de lis design making the cuff larger.  Once all of the sewing was done, I filled in the fleur de lis outline with gold rhinestones.  The lining of gold jersey adds an pleasing touch.

Tomorrow I have orders to fill.  This weekend was my time to play with the stocking design.  Hopefully, I'll be able to make more stockings before the Arts & Wine Festival in October.  Now that all of the designing and digitizing is done, these stockings are a lot of fun to make.

I still haven’t received the certified copy of my birth certificate but we do have some news on this topic. Georgia Vital Statistics has an email. After contacting them via email and explaining the urgency of the matter, they replied that it takes 3-4 weeks turn around to get a certified copy of a birth certificate. It’s been 3 weeks and week number 4 is next Tuesday, so I’m praying the birth certificate arrives next week.

The Cajun Stitchery Party was definitely a success. Our hostess, Dee, was such a delight and went all out for this event. Her home is right out of a beautiful homes magazine. She has mermaids everywhere in her huge home. In fact, the following morning found me limping around with leg muscles aching. Dee has a great dane named Grace, who is truly a gentle giant. All of the merchandise was placed on tables and hung on a beautiful oriental screen. I gave my little introductory speech about doing embroidery on ready made items. The inventory and shipping issues were covered. All of the Etsy items were there as well as many other items. Samples of several items that can be ordered were displayed. I brought the catalog with the Singer designs and one catalog from the wholesale vendor that I use the most, as samples. More than that would be overwhelming. About 12 or so people attended. Some were already friends and others were new acquaintances. Only a few items were purchased from the tables but there were several custom orders placed.

This week has been busy filling the orders from Sunday as well as some other orders. My wholesaler should be happy with me this week because we ordered 19 micro fleece jackets in one order and those have already arrived. I can’t wait to get started on those. This week we have filled an order for an orange and white cell phone holder and wristlet with the letters VOLS embroidered for my friend Patsy Carol. We embroidered a Blue Angels type airplane with initials on a burgundy micro fleece pull over, “MaKenna” on a blue bag, and “Markie” on a black bag for my friend, Mary. We have also ordered a white apron for Mary that will have embroidery on it. My friend, Deb, had us embroider a crown and the letter P on some beautiful pillowcases. The embroidery was in black. The pillowcases are a gold color with sparkles. This design has actually been reblogged on the internet. Another Mary wants a monogram on some little hoods that she made to attach to towels for her grandchildren.

Then we have the robe issue. My friend wants terrycloth robes for Christmas. I have been searching the internet for some nice robes. It’s hard to determine if things constructed of fabric are quality fabric or not on the internet. Like the towels I bought, they were very poor quality but the advertisement for them was “premium”. You would never state in your description, “buy these towels, they are really not very good.” I have found a place that has what appear to be really nice Turkish towels and robes. I’m still trying to get an account with them. I have a robe that George got me one Christmas which is top of the line. I found my robe on this website. I have also been reading a lot about how to tell if terrycloth items are quality or not and about the different types of robes. I don’t want to sell cheap things. People look at our items and the prices and I guess I empathize that they are looking for the lowest prices. Embroidery is not cheap. Not my embroidery. And I don’t want to put quality embroidery on cheap items. Certainly there are low cost items that are constructed well, there are novelty items that don’t need to be constructed really good, but I am very detail oriented and when you get an embroidered item from me, you know that I have looked at that embroidery from every angle to give you the very best. Sometimes little flaws naturally do occur; usually I’m the only one who notices. Top of the line terrycloth is more absorbent, heavy and thick with a luxurious feel. A really good terrycloth robe, spa and hotel quality, will sell retail for around $100 or more. A poor quality terrycloth robe will sell retail for $20-$30. But spa and hotel quality robes are not always what is wanted or needed. These robes are very warm. What about during the summer when it’s hot and you want something to cover up but you are not really looking for warmth? There are very nice robes that fit that situation, like waffle weave terrycloth. One of my favorite summer robes is satin. You can definitely get a good robe in the $20-$30 range; it just depends on whether you want absorbency and warmth or just a cover up.

The house next door is coming along. George has been working diligently on it all week. The AC guy is supposed to come over on Monday to give us an estimate on the AC and heat unit. We can use lots of prayers that the estimate is something affordable. While George is waiting on the drywall to dry in the green house, we have been talking about what to do with the utility shed in the back of our house. It’s a real nice utility shed. At least it was until Ivan visited and took the roof. It’s been sitting out back in this battered condition since Ivan. The blue tarp has long since disintegrated. We thought we were going to have to tear it down completely but George got in there this week and we are hoping that it is salvageable. It would really be nice to have that shed in good condition. George is back and forth from the house next door to the shed. His To-Do list just keeps growing.

The dreams of what we will do with the green house keep growing and my vision gets clearer all of the time. In my mind, I’m already decorating.

Ever since we decided not to smoke in the house, we haven’t. This house has been smoke free for two weeks. That’s another reason the utility shed would be nice – it would give us someplace outside to smoke when the weather is bad. Smoking outside has certainly curtailed our consumption of cigarettes.

Yesterday was my day. I started out with my gift certificate to get my hair done. Oh yes, this is the very first professional hair color job that I’ve ever had. My hair was cut and colored and styled. My eyebrows were waxed, as was my upper lip (getting old sucks). I was there from 9:30 to nearly 1 p.m. and had a blast. In fact, we are talking about having a Cajun Stitchery party at the salon. That would be fun. When I left that salon, for the first time in a very long time, I felt pretty. It was a glorious time.

Later that afternoon, I hemmed my new pants to my new outfit that another friend gave me for my birthday. New hair do, a touch of make up, a new outfit and we went to the Grand Marlin with the gift certificate that I received for my birthday. That was the first time George had been to the Grand Marlin and the first time I had eaten inside. The food was wonderful.

There was no Cajun Corner on Friday because Friday was ME day and I had a great time. Thanks to everyone who contributed.

Tonight is the Wooley Booger Bawl at Paradise at 5 p.m. A new Queen Sugah will be crowned. There is an excellent article in this week’s Island Times with the history of the Wooley Boogers.

Tomorrow morning we are celebrating Becky’s birthday at H2O. Becky has so graciously asked that anyone wishing to give her a present, please get a present for a child 1-6 years old, wrap in Christmas paper, state “boy” or “girl” and the age. Becky will take the gifts for the Santa Rosa County foster children. These will be their Christmas presents. I’ve already embroidered 2 little t-shirts that are so cute.

Christmas is coming and customers are doing their Christmas shopping at Cajun Stitchery. Get this out of the way as soon as you can. For all who have businesses out there, remember that we also sell personalized gift baskets.

Always remember that we are just a call or email away at cajunstitchery@yahoo.com or 850-261-2462 and place your order.

10 Ways to Reuse a Glass Jar

Got any empty glass jars? Get creative and find ways to reuse them!

1. Beach in a jar – This is a fun project for kids who have visited the beach recently and gathered seashells. We just went to Florida and YES we brought home seashells and authentic Florida sand. Simply put some sand in the bottom of the jar (colored play sand works great for this) and add the seashells. A larger shell can be glued to the lid for a finishing touch. Letting the kids paint the shells first is another fun way to add some color.

2. Lantern or candleholder – This is a good project for a glass jar of any size. The kids can use glass paint to create a stained glass look. Use the candle for dining outdoors in the evening…add a citronella candle and you have a bug deterrent too.

3. Use glass jars as paint containers. Just fill with a little paint and away you go. They last longer than plastic, they don’t stain, and since you are reusing something you already have, they are practical too.

4. Flower vase – Glass jars make charming vases. You can give them a layer of paint or a ribbon if desired. Then have your kids pick some wildflowers and you have a lovely arrangement.

5. Snack jars! I like to keep nuts, raisins, shredded coconut etc. glass jars when I can. They stay fresh and they aren’t in close to proximity to plastic.

6. Bank – Jars make great banks. Simply cut a slot in the lid to put change in, and let your child decorate the outside as he or she chooses.

7. An ispy jar – Fill the jar with rice and a few secret objects like a coin, a paperclip, a button, a bead, a small toy, dice, etc and have kids see if they can find all the treasures. Of course make sure to keep and eye on young ones when doing this.

8. Jack-o-lantern jar – This is a great Halloween project. Cut shapes for the eyes, nose and mouth out of masking tape, and place them on the jar. Paint with orange paint, and remove tape when dry. Add a candle or small light to make it glow.

9. Candy jar – This can be decorated any way your child likes. Fill it with candy or other favorite snacks and give it as a gift, or keep it on the coffee table for guests to enjoy.

10. Planter – Put pebbles in the bottom of a small jar, then fill with potting soil. Plant herb or flower seeds, and put in the windowsill.
