It's Already Fall

It's Already Fall

I'm so bad about keeping up with this blog.

It's been 8 months since I last posted anything.

That doesn't mean I haven't been busy.  Just to prove it, I'm adding several items that Cajun Stitchery has worked on this year.

These pictures are definitely not all inclusive.  The machine has been busy this year.

Since last year I've been trying to digitize a Pensacola Beach design for each holiday.  I think that's been pretty much accomplished.

I did the Pensacola Beach Ball and the Pensacola Beach sign for Mardi Gras.  Turned out that lots of people loved the Pensacola Beach Ball but only a few cared for the Pensacola Beach sign.  So, I stuck with the Pensacola Beach Ball.

This little Nutcracker tee shirt was special.  A customer contacted me on Facebook to do this.  She purchased the tee shirt online and had it delivered to me.  I did the embroidery and shipped it to her.  She paid with PayPal.  That was one of the coolest orders I've ever had.  The project just worked perfectly.

I digitized this crawfish awhile back and listed it in the Etsy Store as a digitized design for other embroiderers.  A potential customer contacted me recently wanting a patch with this design and "Crawdad" printed on the claw.  The potential customer never purchased it but I liked the design so much that I have it listed for sale on Etsy.

I made another USA flag quilt this year out of scrap fabric for my husband.  It really turned out nice, used up a bunch of my scrap fabric, and he loves it.  Yes, that's the Pledge of Allegiance stitched on the edges.

And then I started working on aprons.  Just because I wanted to do so.  Then I purchased waaay too much satin fabric in a myriad of colors.  But it makes me happy.

There is a special spot in my heart for the bridges-to-be who contact me.  From robes to handkerchiefs to anything needed to be embroidered for weddings.  I just love doing this.
Until next time

Christmas has come and gone and we are headed toward New Years.

Technically, we are closed this coming week.  The problem is that instead of a week of rest and relaxation, it is now filled with all sorts of things to do.  Some things are pretty mundane, like catching up on our end of the year bookkeeping, getting our annual beach pass and giving the studio a good ceiling to floor cleaning.  While others are a bit more fun, like redecorating for Mardi Gras.  Ah, and then there are some left over orders that didn't need to be finished for Christmas but need to be completed nevertheless.  And, the Etsy Store needs a new 2015 make over taking out the old and putting in the new.

Turning to my trusted Pinterest site, I was looking for ideas on decorating for Mardi Gras.  The Christmas tree is already up, so I'm thinking of replacing the Christmas ornaments with Mardi Gras ornaments.  Our cute Christmas door decor needs to be replaced with something purple, green and gold.  You get the picture.  Ideas are flooding my brain.  Not to mention that I actually do not have any Mardi Gras ornaments and before I can make some, I need to create them.  Basically, it is all just a color change.  Changing the red to purple.  The green and gold can stay from Christmas.  Nativity and Santa/elf designs change to fleur de lis and jester designs.  Throw in some shiny Mardi Gras beads and we should be done.  Easier said that done.

A few months back I took a real good look at our Etsy store and realized there are items in there that have never sold and have sat on the shelves for several years.  Most of the stuff is, well, adorable.  I guess the person who really wants these items never got a chance to see them.  The items in question have been in a "sale" category on Etsy for about a month.  Whatever has not been purchased in the Sale category by January 1, 2015, comes off of Etsy permanently.
This brings me to the realization that I need more merchandise in the Etsy store to replace the removed items.  You know how they say, "you've come a long way, baby"?  Looking at those earlier items, yes, we have come a long way.  There were some good ideas and some bad.  Some items just look cheap and others look nice.  The handkerchiefs stay but the older hankies are going.  Bridal hankies will stay but most non-bridal will go.  Of course, the "You have a booger" handkerchief will stay because we continue to get orders for it.  The "Mom" handkerchiefs now in the shop will go but I think we will replace them with nicer "Mom" handkerchiefs.
Scarves are staying.  I have a dilemma about the scarves.  Some sold but not many.  I'm not sure if it was the price or style.  The scarves in the "Sale" category are going away.  The scarves in the "Accessories" category are going to stay and more may be added.  It seems people are more interested in monograms than other designs.  So, we will keep the pretty chiffon scarves for the monograms.  The lap scarves will stay, only because I do occasionally get inquiries about them.
I'm not sure why the ball caps weren't big sellers.  They are all adorable and reasonably priced.  Nevertheless, they are going away.  Perhaps in the future the ball caps may re-appear for weddings with "Mr." and "Mrs." on them but right now I'm over the ball caps.  There just doesn't seem to be any interest.

Enough about Etsy.  I've had a set of fonts for quite some time but never stitched them out.  I guess the reason is because I put them together for a sampler and the stitch count was so high, I just never had the time or inclination to stitch them out until this past week.  The details in these letters are exquisite.  Each letter is about two inches tall and perfect for hand towels and that sort of thing.

Every once in awhile we get a customer who wants a custom patch.  Such is the case with this patch, "Man shall not live by bread alone".  It turns out that our customer is a chef turned minister.  I think he has a cooking ministry.  He is performing a wedding today and wanted to wear his chef attire but the clothing had the logo from his past employer and he wanted patches to cover up the logo.

It is the week between Christmas and New Years and look at our garden.  We have swiss chard, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, green onions, and carrots.

Then we have our special gardening projects.  George planted the root end of a bunch of celery we purchased and by golly it is growing.

Here's a picture of the cilantro.

And broccoli.

In the same vein as the celery, George planted the root end of some romaine lettuce.  Yep, it is growing.

Have a Happy New Year :)

Wednesday was the All Krewe Fiesta Ball.  My King and I were presented to Tristan de Luna and his Queen and presented with a medallion.  It was very nice and proper.  Well, except for my King who is never totally proper but we love him anyway.  George tried to take pictures but some man kept moving in front of the camera and all George got was a picture of the back of a head.  There was a guy taking pictures as each King and Queen descended the stage.  However, I cannot seem to find any photos in our local paper or on the internet.  A friend was also taking pictures but she hasn’t posted any of them yet.  Guess I’ll call the Fiesta office and see if they know who was taking the photos.

There wasn’t much work done on Wednesday since we had to prepare for the ball that evening.  I sat at my computer polishing my nails and creating baby bib designs that I was posting on Facebook.  There were some really cute designs.  One, I believe I’ll make for my great grandbaby.

Thursday evening I found out that our krewe was having a meeting on Friday night and celebrating one of our krewe member’s birthday.  So, Friday was spent digitizing and embroidering her krewe tee shirt that I’m giving to each of the girls this year for their birthdays.  The embroidery isn’t difficult to do but adding the rhinestones is time consuming.  By the time she arrived at my house with another of our girlfriends I was still working on the rhinestones.  I finally finished the rhinestones and gave her present to her right there.

I also had a simple embroidery job to do for my friend.  Since she took my crown to have it fixed and brought it back to me yesterday, I just called it even on the embroidery job.

While here my two friends took a tour of the new house.   The birthday girl was spending the night with me after our meeting.  When I showed the girls the guest room, one of them said, “Has that bed been here all the time?”  That is how crowded that little room was before we moved the machines next door.  They didn’t even know there was a bed in that room.

My friend who spent the night is a Master Gardener in Mobile.  She brought me what appeared to be a truck load of bushes and assortment of plants.  George worked in the yard all day today planting and has more to plant tomorrow.

Talking about the house next door, I finally emptied the last box in the house of Mama’s stuff.  Don’t get me wrong, there are many boxes remaining in the garage but it was so nice to empty the ones in the house.  I picked up as much as I could, vacuumed, and can even see a bit of counter space now.  We are ready to bring another load of boxes in the house.  The Mission boxes are filled to capacity and I’m really thinking about taking them to the Mission before going further, just to get them out of the house.  If anyone wants to go through the Mission items, please come over and do so soon.  If you find something you want, it is yours for free.  We need room for Mission boxes for the next load of boxes coming into the house.

Have a wonderful week.

Big thank you to my friend Sandy for the following:

Its getting that time again...Flea & Tick Remedy

8 oz apple cider vinegar
4 oz warm water
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp baking soda

Mix dry ingredients first then slowly add to wet as the vinegar and baking soda will react slightly. Put into spray bottle and spray pets down. Be careful not to get in pets eyes.

Use Borax throughout the house; sprinkle it on the carpets and let sit for a few hours, and then vacuum. This should kill all the fleas and ticks in your home and on your pets.

Another big thank you to Sandy for the following:

Thibodeaux and Boudreaux entered a chocolate store. As they were looking at the
candy, Thibodeaux stole 3 chocolate bars. When they left the store Thibodeaux
said to Boudreaux, "I'm the best thief, I stole 3 chocolate bars and no one saw
me put them in my pocket. You can’t beat that.

Boudreaux replied: "You want to see something better? Let's go back to the
shop and I'll show you real stealing."  I'll steal while the shopkeeper
is watching me and he won't even know.

So they went to the counter and Boudreaux said to the shopkeeper: "Do you want
to see a great magic trick?" The shopkeeper replied: "Yes".  Boudreaux
said: "Give me three chocolate bars." The shopkeeper gave him three chocolate
bars and Boudreaux ate all three.

The shopkeeper asked: "But where's the magic?"
Boudreaux replied: "Look in Thibodeaux's pocket."

Our customer loved the ball caps; however, we forgot to take pictures.  Luckily, we took some pictures when we were working on the design in the beginning but it would have been nice to have a photo or two of all 65 ball caps.

Now we are working on a towel order.  The customer wants a peace sign, mermaid, and fish embroidered in all white on her bath towels, wash cloths, and hand towels.  George is working on this order, too.  He is quite the little embroiderer.  The designs worked out well except for the little fish that the customer requested.  The fish is an outline type design and the lines were so thin that the loops in the fabric covered the outline.  The design had to be altered to thicken the lines.  They are working fine now.  To hold the loops in the terrycloth down to embroider, a special overlay stabilizer is required.  The stabilizer is basically starch made into sheets.  Once the embroidery is done and the tearaway stabilizer is removed from the back, the towels need to be washed to remove the stabilizer on top.  Recently in one of the embroidery periodicals that I read there was an article on this suggesting using a thin plastic, rather than the water soluble overlay.  That would not work in this situation because of the outlining in the designs.  It would work nicely on fill or appliqué designs.

What have I been doing?  Mardi Gras put me terribly behind on all of my birthday gifts for the girls.  I have everything to make the gifts but there are a few steps to the project and all I can say is that I’m working on it in my spare time.

In the meantime, I’m combining a couple of projects.  When I use my Embird digitizing program to download true type fonts, they usually look great on the computer screen.  That does not mean they will stitch out okay.  In fact, when I send anyone a “computer simulation” of a design, any design, that is exactly what it is, a computer rendition of the embroidery design.   A computer screen does not have depth or drape or any of the issues involved in hooping and stitching.  The computer simulation could stitch out horribly or beautifully.  You just never know until you stitch it out.

Nevertheless, I have recently downloaded a whole bunch of true type fonts.  They are more in thee area of antique, heirloom type fonts.  It takes awhile to create one of the samplers, so I decided to make little in-the-hoop purses with the girls’ initials in some of the new fonts.  In addition to that, there are fonts called ornaments and wingdings.  If it is a true type font, I should be able to change it into embroidery stitches.  Some of the ornaments that were downloaded are beautiful curly cues and swirls to enhance the monogram.  I am using some of these around the monograms on the little purses to see how they look and stitch out.  One that I did actually stitched out pretty nice but the columns were so thin that it kept breaking the thread.  Remember:  not everything done with pen and ink can be duplicated in embroidery.

The purses themselves are a design that I created.  The entire purse is made in-the-hoop.  Once the purse is taken out of the embroidery hoop, the only thing left to do is attaching the handle/strap with grommets and attaching the snap.  It is a really awesome process and we can make these purses up to 10” square.

Now that the house next door a/k/a the green house is remodeled, we are working out decorating ideas.  Our garage still has Mama’s apartment furnishings in it.  I never had any place to put her stuff, nor did I have the heart to go through it.  Now is the time.

The house is going to be a multi-purpose house with Cajun Stitchery occupying a portion.  So, it will be a semi-business, semi-home thing.  It needs to be available for my Nereid girls to meet and spend the night, so, beds are going to be important.  There are a lot of beds, tables, ottomans, chairs, drawers, etc., that George is going to have to make for me if I cannot find what I want in Mama’s apartment, or at the Salvation Army or Waterfront Mission.

In addition to the furniture, there are 20 windows that need curtains and I will make those.  There are rugs, towels, etc., needed.  All sorts of things that I need to buy or make and, of course, embroider.  If you are local and want to get rid of tee shirts, send them over.  It doesn’t matter if they are ripped or stained.  I plan to make some rag rugs out of them.

We have had a few cold days lately, down into the low 30’s.  Today is like Spring and absolutely beautiful.  None of our newly planted seeds have sprouted yet.  That’s probably a good thing since the sprouts would have been injured by the cold.
