I almost made it on time this week. I hope my lack of consistency caused everyone to go to the blog and look at the new photographs that we posted this week.
Did you hear that the Deepwater Horizon well may be capped? Say a prayer that it truly is capped and the flow of oil into the Gulf has completely stopped.
I haven’t listed anything on Etsy in over a week. Unbelievable! You know why? Because we’ve had so much work that I haven’t had time for those little creative items. That’s a good thing but I still need to tend to the Etsy store. My latest idea is that I need to list several items in one day. I am pleased that even though I haven’t listed anything new, there are still visitors each day – although those numbers are dwindling now.
After our last Cajun Corner, I did get an email from our friendly Island Times lady who told me that the Arts & Wine Festival is on for this year. Yippee!!! Cajun Stitchery better get going on creating enough stock to satisfy the hoards of people that we know will be dropping by our booth.
The bags that we ordered came in and we filled an order for a wonderful friend and customer. She ordered two bags and two sets of pillowcases. One set of pillowcases was for her elderly mother who loves the color pink. We put her name, Sally, and pink butterflies all over the ends of the pillowcases. They turned out beautiful. In fact, the entire order turned out lovely and we’ve enjoyed the praises from our customer – keep it up Lynn. I tease her and tell her she’s trying to win the best customer of the year award. You know, I probably should create such an award but oh those poor losers. (Snicker, snicker)
The 4 dozen caps also arrived and George, the cap man, has been working on those. Those caps are going on sale for the August 21st Mystic Krewe of Nereids SPLASH party at Paradise Bar & Grill on Pensacola Beach. If you are in the area, please make a point of joining us. Support our local businesses, please.
Another fun order was for the red lips designs. The customer ordered a hanky with regular red lips. Then she ordered another hanky with red lips and a zipper closing the lips. Those red lip designs are a hoot. To fill the order, we have to do a stitch out. A stitch out is using some fabric and stitching out the design to make sure nothing goes askew before we do the final stitch out on the end product for the customer. The practice stitch outs for the red lips went on a piece of white, sheer fabric that ended up kind of cute. I took it to my Wednesday girl’s night and one of my friends snatched that up in a hurry. Ha! It was only scrap, but she loves it.
For our red lips customer, we also embroidered a golf towel. I’ve seen golf towels for sale but since I don’t know anything about golf or what is needed for golf, I never paid much attention. This customer wanted one of our hand towels, with a grommet in one corner, and a name in the opposing corner. When she said it was a golf towel, I told her that I have lots of golf designs, in fact, I have a golf font. Once she saw the golf font, she was sold.
Another bag that came with last week’s order was for a diaper bag a customer wants to give for a baby shower present. The customer copied the picture that her friend had of the baby’s logo off of Facebook. It certainly was not a clear picture because there was a glare that just about covered the picture, but that’s what we had. I digitized a few designs and one was chosen. She has also ordered a baby sling to be shipped to Cajun Stitchery for the same logo to be embroidered. The diaper bag was finished last night but I haven’t had a chance to show the picture to the customer. I’ll post the picture once I let the customer see it.
This same customer, who I think is also trying to win the best customer of the year award, ordered some more napkins. She told me that the couple to be wed has maroon and forest green colors in their kitchen and they are the Hookers. My instructions were to use those colors and come up with a design. Of course, there’s the obvious. One night I went through literally thousands of designs looking for simple designs of anything that hooks. My first thought was fishing, a lure. I finally gave her three designs: one was The Hookers and a fishing lure; one was The Hookers and several hooking devices; and the last was The Hookers and a very fancy lady. She chose the one with the hooking devices. I tweaked that design a bit to make it more symmetrical and voila, we had our design. Those napkins were embroidered today. The customer has not seen them yet but the pictures will be posted after they are sent to the customer.
Another customer wanted three sets of four white napkins with a pink camellia and one set with a P, another with a K, and the last with a C. This customer also inquired about finger towels. You know, the little hand towels with the fringe on the end. We didn’t have any in stock so we began looking for them. Wal-Mart didn’t have them, nor did Dollar Tree, Target, Beall’s, or Big Lots. A wholesaler had them and we ordered the minimum shipment, which means that we are going to have lots of finger towels for sale at Cajun Stitchery. I couldn’t believe that we couldn’t find finger towels anywhere. If you need finger towels and can’t find them, when this shipment arrives, we’ll have them. It’s a new wholesaler for us and we’ll see how punctual they are.
Christmas is coming and customers are starting to do their Christmas shopping at Cajun Stitchery. It is a very good idea to get this out of the way early.
Our sleep schedule remains messed up. This is partly the reason Cajun Corner is so late this week.
We are still getting the bell peppers and green beans from the garden. Yummy.
Today I stitched out something that I’ve wanted to do for awhile – our leopard font. It is really cool. It still needs a bit of tweaking before I want to offer it for sale but, I took my stitch outs to my girls last night and did get a lot of ooooohs and awwwwws. There is also the zebra font that I’ve never tested.
Speaking of the girls, we had a wonderful Nereid meeting last night. Those girls are so supportive but we can fight like cats and dogs, too. The bottom line is that we are all like sisters and it’s wonderful. Everyone should have a group of friends that stick together through thick and thin. I adore all of these women but shhhhhh; please don’t tell them because it will go straight to their already inflated heads.

Ammonia was used during World War II to power buses in Belgium, and in engine and solar energy applications prior to 1900. Liquid ammonia was used as the fuel of the rocket airplane, the X-15. Although not as powerful as other fuels, it left no soot in the reusable rocket engine and its density approximately matches the density of the oxidizer, liquid oxygen, which simplified the aircraft's design.
Ammonia has been proposed as a practical alternative to fossil fuel for internal combustion engines.[35] The calorific value of ammonia is 22.5 MJ/kg (9690 BTU/lb) which is about half that of diesel. In a normal engine, in which the water vapour is not condensed, the calorific value of ammonia will be about 21% less than this figure. It can be used in existing engines with only minor modifications to carburetors/injectors.

The 60 MW Rjukan dam in Telemark, Norway produced ammonia via electrolysis of water for many years from 1913 producing fertilizer for much of Europe. If produced from coal, the CO2 can be readily sequestrated [35][36] (the combustion products are nitrogen and water). In 1981 a Canadian company converted a 1981 Chevrolet Impala to operate using ammonia as fuel.[37][38]
Ammonia engines or ammonia motors, using ammonia as a working fluid, have been proposed and occasionally used [39]. The principle is similar to that used in a fireless locomotive, but with ammonia as the working fluid, instead of steam or compressed air. Ammonia engines were used experimentally in the 19th century by Goldsworthy Gurney in the UK and in streetcars in New Orleans in the USA.

Bet you were wondering what happened to your issue of Cajun Corner. I apologize. I’m late by 2 days. Let me see if I can catch you up-to-date.
Saturday, a week ago, we met George’s sister, Kathie, for lunch at the Crab Shack in Perdido. Our home is about half way between Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. Even though she lives in Fairhope, AL which is only about an hour away, we rarely visit each other. Usually 2 or 3 times a year, we meet half way. Lunch was delightful and we walked to the beach area where there were crews working but, surprisingly, a lot of sun bathers. The water and the beach looked beautiful. We were also surprised that standing at the edge of the beach we could see an oil rig in the water off of Alabama’s coastline. Florida doesn’t allow off shore drilling. None of us realized that they were so close to the shore that you could see them that clear.
The 4th of July: We ended up having a neighborhood bar-b-que with a decadent amount of food. We set up the table outside under our neighbor’s oak tree and it was actually pleasant. Not too hot at all. We ate until I told George I was grateful we took the car and didn’t walk. Had we walked, he would have had to roll me home. As it was I simply waddled to the car. Everyone else was planning on going downtown to watch the fireworks. We politely bowed out. Instead, we had a glass of wine and sat on the deck watching the neighborhood fireworks. The evening was as pleasant as the afternoon.
Monday may have been a holiday for most people but not at Cajun Stitchery. Over the weekend I had some ideas on making lace with Boudreaux and incorporating the lace into handkerchiefs. I played with the idea over the weekend and did make a few, each time figuring out something else. By Monday I think I had the process down pat. All of the lace handkerchiefs were listed on Etsy and WOW! People started hitting the website and looking at the handkerchiefs. There were a few who left hearts on our shop and some others left hearts for the items (meaning they like them). People are still visiting those handkerchiefs. One lady sent a convo (inner Etsy email) asking if I could personalize a hanky with a poem. Of course, I replied yes, please send the poem. She never responded after that. Even my friends were telling me how beautiful these handkerchiefs are. But no one bought them. I am selling them for $6 each. After perusing other handkerchiefs on Etsy, I realized $6 is way to low. There are no others like mine and other shops are selling their handkerchiefs for $20 and up. I increased the price on the last handkerchief that I posted to $10. They really are a steal. As I list more and more of these handkerchiefs, the price will become more in line with the other shops. So, get ‘em now before the price goes up.
I’ve also been thinking about the Arts & Wine Festival on the beach. I’m assuming we will have our 3rd Annual Festival but I haven’t heard anything about it. Last year it was in October. I need to get my stock up so that we have plenty to sell at the Festival.
We ordered some bags from a wholesaler this week for some customer orders and I’ve kept myself busy working on these orders. We’ve now ordered 4 dozen caps to fill another order.
All of this was on my mind and I had made a fabric shopping list and knew I needed to go to my favorite store – Fabric World. That happened on Thursday. I took my list and once in the store I was so overwhelmed with fabric that I forgot why I wanted the fabric on my list. I ended up getting a bunch of fabric to add to my house full of fabric collection. George said I went into that store and touched every piece of fabric in there, then started again and made another complete round of fabric touching before I even began picking out what I wanted. He is such a patient man.
George was waiting on a call or email or something telling him where to go to get permitted for the job. When all was said and done, he had to take an online course and then a test. He made 100% on the test, of course. His first night on the job was Friday night. We were preparing for him to be awake all night and into the morning. We were trying to adjust his sleep routine. I ended staying up all night and he slept. Hence, my sleep routine is now totally out of whack. I slept Friday and was awake most of the night working on orders. George got home around 5 a.m. and was beat. The job is easy, the hours and humidity are rough. Of course, he couldn’t do the job at all if he had to work during the day because his doctor makes him cover his body up since the skin cancer was removed. We both ended up going to bed mid-morning and now it’s 4 a.m. and we are both awake.
We’ve been getting green beans and bell peppers from our garden lately. Home grown is so good.
I’m going to post some pictures of items we’ve been embroidering this week, pillowcases, messenger bag, and a tote bag. They are beautiful.

Boudreaux and Thibodeaux go see a movie. Boudreaux, in the middle of the movie, turns to Thibodeaux and says, “Betcha five bucks he falls off da horse.”
“You’re on” says Thibodeaux.
Sure enough, the guy in the movie falls off his horse. Thibodeaux hands his friend the five bucks.
Boudreaux admits, "I seen this movie before. I knew he’d fall off da horse.” He hands him back the money.
Thibodeaux tells him, “I seen this movie before, too. I just din't tink he’d be stupid enough to fall off his horse again!”

Bet you were wondering what happened to your issue of Cajun Corner. I apologize. I’m late by 2 days. Let me see if I can catch you up-to-date.
Saturday, a week ago, we met George’s sister, Kathie, for lunch at the Crab Shack in Perdido. Our home is about half way between Pensacola Beach and Perdido Key. Even though she lives in Fairhope, AL which is only about an hour away, we rarely visit each other. Usually 2 or 3 times a year, we meet half way. Lunch was delightful and we walked to the beach area where there were crews working but, surprisingly, a lot of sun bathers. The water and the beach looked beautiful. We were also surprised that standing at the edge of the beach we could see an oil rig in the water off of Alabama’s coastline. Florida doesn’t allow off shore drilling. None of us realized that they were so close to the shore that you could see them that clear.
The 4th of July: We ended up having a neighborhood bar-b-que with a decadent amount of food. We set up the table outside under our neighbor’s oak tree and it was actually pleasant. Not too hot at all. We ate until I told George I was grateful we took the car and didn’t walk. Had we walked, he would have had to roll me home. As it was I simply waddled to the car. Everyone else was planning on going downtown to watch the fireworks. We politely bowed out. Instead, we had a glass of wine and sat on the deck watching the neighborhood fireworks. The evening was as pleasant as the afternoon.
Monday may have been a holiday for most people but not at Cajun Stitchery. Over the weekend I had some ideas on making lace with Boudreaux and incorporating the lace into handkerchiefs. I played with the idea over the weekend and did make a few, each time figuring out something else. By Monday I think I had the process down pat. All of the lace handkerchiefs were listed on Etsy and WOW! People started hitting the website and looking at the handkerchiefs. There were a few who left hearts on our shop and some others left hearts for the items (meaning they like them). People are still visiting those handkerchiefs. One lady sent a convo (inner Etsy email) asking if I could personalize a hanky with a poem. Of course, I replied yes, please send the poem. She never responded after that. Even my friends were telling me how beautiful these handkerchiefs are. But no one bought them. I am selling them for $6 each. After perusing other handkerchiefs on Etsy, I realized $6 is way to low. There are no others like mine and other shops are selling their handkerchiefs for $20 and up. I increased the price on the last handkerchief that I posted to $10. They really are a steal. As I list more and more of these handkerchiefs, the price will become more in line with the other shops. So, get ‘em now before the price goes up.
I’ve also been thinking about the Arts & Wine Festival on the beach. I’m assuming we will have our 3rd Annual Festival but I haven’t heard anything about it. Last year it was in October. I need to get my stock up so that we have plenty to sell at the Festival.
We ordered some bags from a wholesaler this week for some customer orders and I’ve kept myself busy working on these orders. We’ve now ordered 4 dozen caps to fill another order.
All of this was on my mind and I had made a fabric shopping list and knew I needed to go to my favorite store – Fabric World. That happened on Thursday. I took my list and once in the store I was so overwhelmed with fabric that I forgot why I wanted the fabric on my list. I ended up getting a bunch of fabric to add to my house full of fabric collection. George said I went into that store and touched every piece of fabric in there, then started again and made another complete round of fabric touching before I even began picking out what I wanted. He is such a patient man.
George was waiting on a call or email or something telling him where to go to get permitted for the job. When all was said and done, he had to take an online course and then a test. He made 100% on the test, of course. His first night on the job was Friday night. We were preparing for him to be awake all night and into the morning. We were trying to adjust his sleep routine. I ended staying up all night and he slept. Hence, my sleep routine is now totally out of whack. I slept Friday and was awake most of the night working on orders. George got home around 5 a.m. and was beat. The job is easy, the hours and humidity are rough. Of course, he couldn’t do the job at all if he had to work during the day because his doctor makes him cover his body up since the skin cancer was removed. We both ended up going to bed mid-morning and now it’s 4 a.m. and we are both awake.
We’ve been getting green beans and bell peppers from our garden lately. Home grown is so good.
I’m going to post some pictures of items we’ve been embroidering this week, pillowcases, messenger bag, and a tote bag. They are beautiful.

Tar balls are on the beach but that hasn’t stopped or even closed down the beach. I read one article that said the tourists are taking their little sand buckets out and picking up tar balls, too.
Wednesday night we attended the Fiesta Ball. And we had a ball. There are pictures taken by our wonderful photographer, DJ, on the web. If you are on Facebook, go to the Krewe of Wrecks page to see the great pictures. This year the Fiesta Ball was at the Corrine Jones Center on Johnson’s Beach. I hadn’t been to Johnson’s Beach since before Hurricane Ivan. What a difference a hurricane makes. The apartments and condos are all gone. Corrine Jones Center is now a beautiful, large center with picture windows overlooking the bay. It is simply beautiful. The Ball tickets were sold out weeks ago. The only down side to the ball was that everyone who wanted to attend, couldn’t. We were lucky and had our names on a waiting list. We got the call a week ago that there was a cancellation and we did get tickets. I wore my green Mardi Gras costume and George wore the matching bowtie that I made.
I had a couple of visor and cap deliveries to make Wednesday and it just happened that the customers were going to be at the Ball. Yep, we brought the orders to the ball and one customer wore her hat the entire evening. Great PR for Cajun Stitchery, don’t you think?
Needless to say, Thursday morning arrived much too soon. It was slow moving Thursday morning. The infamous DJ started posting Ball photos and there is a good photo of George and me. Later in the day she posted, with my permission, the cutest picture of me dancing with a nice, young Marine (cigarettes and drink in hand). Oh yes, and a cute little sailor taught me to moon walk. My heart just melts over a man in a uniform. I took my sailor home with me about 40 years ago.
The wholesale company where we buy our hats has a monthly sale. We have been able to take advantage of their monthly sales since we began embroidering ball caps and we are able to pass those savings along. The patriotic visors are an example of one of their sales. The normal ball cap or visor would sell for about $10 but we are finding that we can sell the ones on sale for $5. Good deal for everyone. Of course, when the sale is over we can still get the caps or visors but at a higher price for us, and hence, a higher price for our customers. So, take advantage of those sales. We still have a few of the patriotic visors remaining. Don’t forget Flag Day is June 14th and the 4th of July is just around the corner. This week we have the $5 sale on a couple of colors of the ponytail caps: the burgandy cap and one with a green bill and khaki crown. The $5 sale, of course, is without embroidery. We’ll be glad to embroider on it, but that is an additional charge.
The garden just gets prettier and prettier. We have been harvesting tomatoes every day this week.
I’m still working on Etsy. I’ve rearranged our store on Etsy several times. I’m trying to get a new item on their everyday, although some days I don’t. Now I’m reading the forums and participating in that way. Etsy says that by participating in the forums you get your name out to other Etsiers and that’s a good thing.
I do have a special order for a “droid” holder. She wants a mermaid. I made one prototype that is for sale on Etsy now. I have other ideas. Please visit our Etsy shop.
Today we have to fill some more cap/visor orders and I’m finishing up some pillowcases. Hope I don’t forget to take pictures.
We still haven’t decided what plants to put in Mama’s Garden outside the embroidery room. We’ll get it done eventually. At least the hydrangea is out there and has lovely blue flowers.
Our monthly Nereid meeting is tonight and I’ve embroidered a beautiful set of pillowcases for one of the girls whose birthday was a week ago. Sunday we are having a birthday brunch for another Nereid. Next Thursday is my son’s 42nd birthday. And in a couple of weeks is another birthday. On top of everything else, I’m busy making birthday presents.

Here are just some of the ways to do eco-friendly Spring cleaning.
• Garage sales: Instead of just throwing things away, hold a garage sale. If you don’t want to hold one on your own, then see if there are people in the neighborhood that want to have a garage sale with you.
• Donate: You can use Freecycle or donate your used items to your local church. This can include household items, computer equipment, cell phone and even building materials.
• Sell Items: If you have items that you don’t want to just give away, use eBay to sell your items. You can also use Craigslist or some local second hand shops buy used items.
• Reuse those Ziploc bags by washing them out and letting them dry.
• Use the library where you will find books, movies and cds available for borrowing.
• Set up a neighborhood share program that allows you to share items like lawn mowers and ladders.
• When cleaning up dust in the house use plant based cleaner to make them better for the environment and the health of your family.

I wanted to tell you that the good news is that so far the oil has still not landed on the shores of Florida. However, I heard this morning that tar balls have been found this morning on our beautiful Ft. Pickens beach. The oil is still flowing. I would much rather expend my energy on finding a solution and looking at the positive side of things than simply hating BP. There are, common sense, eco-friendly solutions to this oil spill dilemma, i.e., hay, hair, fur, oil eating bacteria. These have been proffered to the proper authorities by many people much smarter than me. We have been told that those methods will not be used. No explanation was given. Instead they are using toxic dispersants and ineffective booms. George and I have sent a message to President Obama asking simply for a reason the eco-friendly methods are not being used. It’s sad and I’m trying to find something positive about the whole thing. I hope that the positive side of this is a wake up call about our delicate environment and that we need to be good stewards.
This week has been a short week and full of ball caps. We have an order from a lady with the Krewe of Junkanoos for some ponytail ball caps. We have been working diligently to get their logo to stitch out well on ball caps. Digitizing for ball caps is very different from other digitizing. We have been reading every article we can get, as well as, watching every video we can find. The rule of thumb is to digitize/stitch center out, top to bottom. The design must be 2” or less in height. That is very small and causes the stitches to be small and small stitches can cause problems. We had ordered some practice caps and have used them up. Most of them turned out fine, only George and I know what is wrong. One of the Junkanoo ladies stopped by to drop off a jacket the other day. I was wearing the white cap that we practiced on and she bought it off my head. They look good. We have had to tweak the design to stitch out better but I think we have it down now. I wore another of the practice caps to my Wednesday night with the girls’ event and another Junkanoo bought it off of my head. Now we need to do the ponytail caps to fill the order. I think George is doing that today.
We still have some of the visors that were on sale last week. I’ll leave them on sale for this week, too. Flag Day is June 14th and the 4th of July is right around the corner. We have embroidered on a few of them without a problem. Names and initials usually are simple to embroider. These are really nice visors. We can now get just about any color visor or ball cap that you could want, structured or unstructured, long bill or short bill. We can even get bucket hats. We are definitely your place to purchase hats/caps.
The garden has been so much fun this week. We are now picking tomatoes and bell peppers. The chili peppers and cherry tomatoes are not ready yet. George made the most scrumptious stuffed bell peppers last night with bell peppers, onions and carrots from our garden. Also, I’ve learned to make iced tea with the stevia and it tastes great.
I did go on another internet spending binge this week. I needed to make George a bowtie for an upcoming ball we are attending. I want his bowtie to match my outfit. Out came my bowtie pattern. Then I realized that I don’t have the bowtie hardware. I can make a bowtie that you tie around your neck but most guys prefer the bowtie that hooks in the back. That way they don’t have to fool with tying the bow. Off to the internet I went searching for the bowtie hardware. The first one used regular hooks and eyes and a snap but that just looked too homemade. Truthfully, I never could find the slide and hook, but I noticed that other people are making them with small clasps. Not long ago I had run across a website that had a lot of sewing hardware. I think the website is really intended for making dog and cat collars, leashes, horse blankets, and so forth. I clicked on the clasps and ordered those and then clicked on continue shopping. That was my downfall. There were hooks that I could use on my cell phone pouches. Had to have that. Well, maybe this other hook would be better. Had to buy both kinds to know which is better. I bet I could use this or that. Oh well, I don’t even remember all of the stuff that I bought but it has been shipped and should arrive in the next few days.
George is building a wall of plants in Mama’s Garden outside the embroidery room. He has put up wires and hopefully it will be our version of the hanging gardens. Hope it works.
I have learned that I need to put one new thing on Etsy every day or two so visitors can expect and get something new to see when they visit. I haven’t put anything on there in a week. Last night I made two more cell phone holders and I hope to put those on today and tomorrow and get back to making things. I think I was in a creative slump.
George is stitching out our oil spill design on a napkin right now. I’m going to a meeting at 11:30 this morning and I want to wear that design. We just haven’t figured out where to put the design, so we went with a napkin. The design is about 5” square and all of my tee shirts have the Cajun Stitchery logo. I was thinking about the right side of a tee shirt, now I’m considering the back.

Over the past year I have tried to research some simple things that I could do in the kitchen, where I spend 90% of my day, to make it more of a green environment. I know that using washable dish rags, using dish towels instead of paper towels where something I could do but I wasn’t sure what else could be done. Well I did some research and found some great things that can everyone can do to make a more green environment for your kitchen.
Bamboo Cutting Board- Bamboo is harder than most wood that is used in cutting board and much safer than using the plastic ones.
Using Organic Products- I have started to use more organic spices and coco powders when I cook or bake.
Buy Manual Kitchen Products- This wasn’t too hard for me since I don’t have a food processor or stand mixer, simply have always done the chopping or mixing by hand. But you can also by manual egg beater, can openers and other items that many people use electric.
Buy Green Smart Cookware- Many big name companies are making more green smart cookware. This is often cookware that is made from petroleum free ceramics and other chemical free while staying non-stick.
Bamboo Bowls- Bamboo not only looks nice but they are natural products and a great solution to having plastic mixing and serving bowls.
Coffee Press- There are tons of coffee drinkers but think about going non-electric for coffee time by purchasing a coffee press.

I know that using washable dish rags, using dish towels instead of paper towels where something I could do but I wasn’t sure what else could be done. Well I did some research and found some great things that can everyone can do to make a more green environment for your kitchen.
Bamboo Cutting Board- Bamboo is harder than most wood that is used in cutting board and much safer than using the plastic ones.
Using Organic Products- I have started to use more organic spices and coco powders when I cook or bake.
Buy Manual Kitchen Products- This wasn’t too hard for me since I don’t have a food processor or stand mixer, simply have always done the chopping or mixing by hand. But you can also by manual egg beater, can openers and other items that many people use electric.
Buy Green Smart Cookware- Many big name companies are making more green smart cookware. This is often cookware that is made from petroleum free ceramics and other chemical free while staying non-stick.
Bamboo Bowls- Bamboo not only looks nice but they are natural products and a great solution to having plastic mixing and serving bowls.
Coffee Press- There are tons of coffee drinkers but think about going non-electric for coffee time by purchasing a coffee press.

It has been a pretty busy week. We delivered the polo shirts to our new customer Flora-Bama Farms. If you live in this area, please visit Flora-Bama Farms are 6404 Mobile Hwy. It’s a fresh fruit and vegetable market and they have some pretty good deals. They carry a lot of the Amish foods, as well. The prices are very reasonable. You are buying local. It’s a win-win situation. Not to mention they love our embroidery and are thinking about ball caps and aprons.
The neighborhood gang has not gotten together since the going away party. I’m thinking that we need to remedy this situation soon.
The lettuce and other cold weather crops have pretty much been harvested and are gone. So, sad to see that gone but our tomatoes are growing. Each year we have success with the little cherry tomatoes but not the larger tomato. This year George purchased several Better Boy seedlings, instead of starting from seed, and they seem to be working. The tomatoes are still green but if they all turn red, we are going to have a bounty for sure. We also, of course, have the little cherry tomatoes planted. The bell peppers are just about ready to pick. They are green. We have a few that are a pickable size. If we leave them on the plant, they will turn yellow and then red. It looks like bell peppers are going to be a winner this year, too. We still have some carrots and onions in the garden. The parsley is going to seed. The stevia is back and lush. The lemon balm grows everywhere. That is one amazing plant. We had to pull it out of the herb garden (we never planted it there in the first place) and in the process, the mint came out, too. I’m hoping the mint comes back.
George planted some eggplant but just a few. The first year we planted eggplant we had so much I couldn’t give it all away. Of course, now maybe Flora-Bama Farms will take it. Green beans are still growing.
I made one blackberry cobbler this year. We had more blackberries in our little area but after the first harvest, there was never enough at one time to make another cobbler. We were both so impressed at the working with nature aspect of the blackberries that we are going to section off a larger plot that we will weed and allow the blackberries to grow.
The jasmine is just about finished blooming. That plant has such a wonderful smell. I hope it just covers the entire fence. Speaking of a wonderful smell, the gardenia bushes have been looking pretty sad for the past few years. We think it has to do with them being in a shaded area. George cut them down, almost to the ground. I noticed yesterday that one lone gardenia is blooming from a tiny branch almost on the ground. We have another small gardenia bush that George grew from a clipping that is also blossoming now. Another fabulous smell for our yard.
The lilies are spectacular this year. I took pictures of some of them and posted on Facebook and put more pictures earlier this week on the blog. Some of the lilies smell and others do not.
We planted a little flower garden outside of Mama’s room when she moved in. I wanted her to be able to see beautiful flowers when she awoke in the mornings. That room is now the Cajun Stitchery embroidery room. There is a beautiful blue hydrangea in bloom right now. She would be so pleased. She loved hydrangeas.
With the flowers and plants come the birds. The birds have also been spectacular this spring. The red tailed hawks are not nesting in their usual oak tree. We have had a plethora of cardinals, as well as an array of other species. It’s like they all decided to move into a bird paradise. They drink out of the solar waterfall. They bath in the sprinklers, they eat in the garden. That’s the life. My cats just sit in the window all day staring at the birds, with an occasional meow.
We had many baby grapes on the vine this year. We still have a lot but are noticing that as the grapes are getting bigger, the grapes on the clusters are thinning and we are thinking the birds are enjoying our grapes. Last year George and I were able to enjoy one little bunch of grapes from our vine. I hope the birds leave enough for us this year.
I haven’t made any more cell phone holders. It took days to put the ones I did make on Etsy because I didn’t want to “flood the market” with all of the cell phone holders in one day. We have had a lot of visitors to the store, looking and browsing. Etsy remains a classroom for me in retail. I’m learning a lot.
We had another order for a couple of tee shirts for my Aunt Philo’s bowling team. Seems a couple of gentlemen have decided to join and, of course, needed their own team shirt. You know my aunt is now 92 years old, deaf, has compromised vision and bowls. I am so proud of her.
The really big news this week has been ball caps. YES! The cap sash issue has been conquered. George can put that cap sash on easily. He hooped our first cap and stitched out our Cajun Stitchery logo without a problem. I’ve been wearing that cap all week. We ordered several “practice” ball caps and we are working on all of it. There will still be a learning curve until we get it down perfectly. Part of that curve is in the digitizing. We already have some orders. I digitized the requested design and it stitched out fine on flat fabric but messed up on the cap frame. Who knew? Digitizing for caps requires some special techniques. I’m learning.
I never knew there was a whole lingo for hats and caps. There are structured and unstructured, different size crowns, different size bills, different fabric requires different techniques. We have read instructions and watched videos until I think we are embroidering caps in our sleep.
Several months ago a friend gave us a “ponytail” cap and asked us to learn to embroider on ball caps. The ponytail cap has an opening in the back larger than usual to accommodate ponytails. I looked up the company on the tag and found a really good cap company. This week I send the required documentation to allow Cajun Stitchery to purchase wholesale from this company. To try them out, we ordered two dozen patriotic visors. The prices are good. We ordered the visors delivered UPS ground. The visors arrived yesterday – one day delivery. So far, I’m very impressed with this company. The patriotic visors are our sale of the week. See below.
