Let’s just get this anniversary story going.  What I decided to do for George was hire a chef to come to the studio and cook us a very nice anniversary meal.  I got in touch with a friend who is a chef and she agreed.  I was so excited about this.  I even kept the secret from George, which is not an easy thing for me to do.  Our anniversary was on a Thursday.  That Wednesday morning I turned on FaceBook, as usual, and there was an X-ray of my chef’s hip and leg.  She was in an accident the day before.  I contacted her to find out her status and she said she would be slow because she was on crutches but she fully intended to cook that meal for us.  I had my doubts but was so excited about my grocery surprise.  Thursday she contacted me.  She was in a lot of pain and would have to cancel.  Well, bummer.  Now what?  At least I was able to tell George the wonderful plan I had.  We had Chinese take out for dinner and watched a movie.  Please don’t feel sad for us because the next night, Friday night, we went to Paradise for dinner.  I had posted on FaceBook for friends to join us for our little celebration.  When we arrived one of my sweet Nereid sisters, Chrissy and her husband, Mike, were waiting for us.  We had a delightful dinner together.  Chrissy and Mike then left and I was surprised that one of our very best friends in the world showed up with her mother and great niece.  Suzie is more family than friend.  She has been with us through every major (and minor) event since we moved to Pensacola.  We visited and had a wonderful time.  Then my friend, Angela, and her husband Keith arrived.  Angela, like Suzie, is more family than friend.  In fact, Keith likes to say that Angela wouldn’t have married him if it wasn’t that Suzie and I insisted.  Not only insisted but I performed the wedding ceremony.  After awhile I looked up and another friend, Lisa, appeared.  I hadn’t seen Lisa is many years and we had a lot of catching up to do.  We had so much fun that George said we need to do this every week.  Things always work out for the best and even though I still think the chef idea was a fabulous idea, we had a simply splendid anniversary.
This summer has been very busy at Cajun Stitchery.  Aside from in-town orders, the Etsy handkerchiefs are having a bumper year, especially the lace handkerchiefs.  As you know, I get so tickled at all of the writing these young ladies want on these handkerchiefs.  One lady wanted a lace handkerchief for the groom’s mom and for her mother.  The lace handkerchief has less space for writing than most because the lace takes up the space.  This lady had long sentiments, for a handkerchief, and no matter how I played with the embroidery digitizing, the wording simply was not going to fit in the ¼ hanky area customary for monograms and wording.  I suggest she try another style but she had so much wording that it wouldn’t fit in that ¼ area on any of the handkerchiefs.  Not to mention that she had her heart set on a certain font that just would not stitch out as small as it would need to be.  The end result was letting the wording flow into the rest of the handkerchief and not stay in the ¼ area.  They turned out beautiful and she was very pleased.
I received a call one day from a panicked bride-to-be in Milton.  She needed 2 handkerchiefs: one for mother of the groom and one for mother of the bride.  Problem: she called on a Wednesday and the wedding was the following Saturday.  And, I had other orders ahead of her.  I wasn’t sure I would have time to get this done for her but she was desperate.  Rather than driving to my house, I told her to get on Etsy and go to my shop; then message me that she is the girl I talked to; and she could pick the handkerchief she desired from the Etsy store.  It worked perfectly.  The order was placed, paid, and I made the handkerchiefs.  The only trip required was her fiancé picking up the handkerchiefs.  They were already paid on-line so he didn’t have to bother with anything but the pick up.
We mailed another handkerchief this morning to a lady in California who is getting married next week.  Another goes out Monday to Michigan.
One of the beauties of the wedding handkerchiefs is the stories that go with the orders.  They have either waited too long and are in a hurry to get the hankies, or they want everything just perfect and want to go through every detail.  I think it is so sweet.  I spend much more time on these handkerchiefs than I get paid, but it is kind of nice to think that someone is carrying or gifting something that I made on one of the most special days of their life.  Every bride deserves to have something very beautiful and special.
Since the handkerchiefs are such a hit and because I am a bonafide fabric-holic, I purchased 3 bolts of satin: white, ivory, and black.  The handkerchief section needs to have new and special items.  I’m going to design some satin handkerchiefs and see if the brides like that.
For a week in early August we had onesie week.  It seemed like all orders were for onesies.  In addition to the orders, I had some baby birthdays and showers to tend to myself.  The shower was for a baby boy who is to be named Cruz.  For some reason I got the name Chaz stuck in my head.  I did some really cute monogramming for Chaz.  When I was ready to wrap the gift, thank goodness, I looked at the invitation and saw Cruz.  Well, there is no taking out these stitches.  I ended up monogramming a baby bib and baby cap.  Of course, they never knew what happened.  So, if anyone knows a newborn named Chaz, I have a couple of really cute onesies that I’ll sell cheap.
Then my computer crashed and died.  Thank you Shelley for telling me about Joe Stukey, who now has my computer.  Things I’ve learned from past experiences with computers may have saved the business.
#1.  The only things that I keep on the C drive are my programs; never my files and documents.  Files and documents are kept on an external hard drive, flash drives, and Dropbox.

#2.  Always, always, always make recovery disks and keep them where you can find them.

#3.  Back up everything and do it often.
Our newer computers have Windows 8, the older ones have Windows 7.  I had made recovery disks for Windows 7 but didn’t know how to do it for Windows 8.  The computer guy said that Windows 8 is the first one that will allow you to copy the recovery disks onto a flash drive.  He made a recovery flash drive for George’s computer and I’m still trying to figure it out for mine, but we will get it done.
The other thing that saved the business is that we each have 2 laptops.  Now that my Windows 7 laptop is in the shop, I’m using my Windows 8 laptop.
HAVE A GREAT WEEK

Does anyone know how we got to “No. 51” when there are 2 months remaining in 2013 and I send this e-newsletter out weekly?  I think I may have misnumbered something along the line.  Oh well, I’ve never been very conventional.

For sometime now George and I have discussed getting new computers and leaving one set at the studio and the other set for use at home.  Is that the height of laziness or what?  There are some valid reasons, though.  One is to make our computers last longer and to help back up.  Also, if one goes out on us, we will have another.  After last week’s computer debacle it became apparent that now is the time to get the new computers and we did.  They are laptops and came with Windows 8.  They were very easy to set up.  Windows 8 is very different than Windows 7.  I think we have figured it out now.

The new laptops only have 2 USB plugs.  Guess we didn’t check to see how many USB plugs there were before purchasing.  I need about 7 of them.  Then we purchased USB hubs.

The new laptops do not have a CD/DVD drive.  So, we purchased that.  Luckily our Office Professional 2003 was able to install.  Now I have to find and figure out how to install QuickBooks 2011.  I bet I have to buy the new QuickBooks before it is all over.  Then the embroidery programs will need to be installed.   We still have more computing to do.

The external hard drive that I purchased and did not work is becoming a thorn in my side.  I can’t seem to get the people at Western Digital to respond to me and the extra warranty that I purchased from Amazon won’t let me file a claim until I send my receipt.  The only receipt that I have is an email and I cannot seem to get their email address to accept it.

Basically it was another week spent working on computers.

Jury duty has been postponed for another week.

We have been embroidering every day.  George is working on some really cute Halloween towels.  I worked on a peacock; then a huge fleur de lis sham; and, now I’m working on more embroidery on my curtains.

Etsy changed some things, too.  Nothing changed that is really noticeable to shoppers.  It was more background items.  Now we have an “About” page.

Yesterday I attended a beautiful wedding on the beach.  I don’t recall ever attending a beach wedding.  It was beautiful and fun.  No shoes.  Since the mother of the bride is our krewe member and dance teacher, you have to know that everything involved dancing.  Oh what a fun time that was.  Everyone was still partying when I had to leave.

Have a wonderful week

I saw a photo on Pinterest this week that says it all for last weekend.  Merde! Il Pleut.  I have to add that one to my French repertoire.  I’m surprised that Mama didn’t teach me that one.

What can I say about U-verse?  Well, like my Daddy Johnny used to say, “say bell, like you are ringing a bell.  Then say mad, like you are angry.  Bell Mad (Belle merde).  That’s how you say ‘shit’ in French.”  We have been online and offline all week.  As soon as it seems the thing is working, it goes down, again.  Luckily, there are other things to do on the computer where being online doesn’t matter.  I can do my bookkeeping without being online.  I can play games without being online.  I can write Cajun Corner, although there is a possibility that I won’t be able to actually send it to anyone.

This week I looked at my ever growing collection of scrap fabric and got into a ruffle mood.  I love the ruffle attachment on my sewing machine.  I’ve been ruffling up a storm.  Right now I’m making a little purse that I will never use that is all ruffles.  Cute as it can be.  It is kind of shabby chic.  The sad thing is that I have more purses and bags than some stores.  This one is coral and teal.  It is very pretty but it is also not finished.  Maybe I’ll put it on Etsy and see if anyone wants to buy it.

While I was in ruffle mode, I ran across directions for a really cool fabric flower.  No, not a ruffled flower.   I want to incorporate the flowers into the ruffled purse, so, I made the flowers out of the same coral and teal fabric.  You know, I’ll probably end up selling this purse for $5 or $10 when I have put days of work into the project.  It doesn’t seem right but buyers are always looking for a bargain.

The roof next door leaked during our rain storms last weekend. We have a 15 year warranty and have had the roofer back 6 or 7 times to fix leaks in the last few years.  They finally made it here late Friday afternoon.  Now they are telling us that the shingles are defective and they took a couple of the shingles and are sending to the manufacturer, who also has a 15 year warranty, for replacements.  They said the whole roof has defective shingles.  Belle merde!  You would think that after returning 6 or 7 times to fix leaks, they would have figured this out years ago.  Oh well, all we can do is wait and see.

After a weekend of CSI Miami, I was totally over it.  Then we saw that CSI Miami is being cancelled on TV.  We didn’t even know it was still on.  It really was a good show and George continues to watch his 3 years worth of DVDs.

My poor cat, Tigger, is not looking well.  I’m afraid the end is near.  He quit eating, so, we got canned tuna in oil.  This has always been his favorite food.  Even as George was opening the can, Tigger came into the kitchen.  We gave him the tuna and he ate and ate, lapping up the liquid.  He probably got some solids in there, too, but left most of the solids.  He sat in front of the tuna just staring at it, as though he really wanted that tuna, but just wouldn’t eat it.  We tried again, today.  Again, Tigger came.  He put his head to the food but never even licked it.  All he did was drink some water.  He is now as light as a feather and even his backbone is showing.  He was Mama’s favorite cat.  He has the most personality of any of our animals.  People who have visited know Tigger because he would tap people on the shoulder for a nice pet or acknowledgement.  It just breaks my heart to know what must be done.

This afternoon George and I attended the Woolly Boogar Bawl at Paradise Bar & Grill on the beach.  The band was great.  The attendance was fabulous.  We probably had more fun at this party than any of the previous ones.  Looking through the crowd, even my accountant showed up.  Of course, she had no idea we would be there.  I saw friends that I hadn’t seen in a long time.  It was just a wonderful party. The Woolly Boogar Bawl in June is our attempt to blow away any hurricanes for the season.  We have another Woolly Boogar Bawl in November where we say goodbye to Hurricane Season for the year.  Any excuse for a party.

Tomorrow is Father’s Day, and, my son, Hank’s, 44th birthday.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY

I can remember my Cajun Grandmother’s remedy for taking warts off my father’s hands. As a little girl, I watched one day as we (MaMere, Daddy and me) were walking in the wooded area behind her house looking for wild blackberries to pick so she could make us a cobbler. She was only 4’10″ and my Dad towered above her a good two feet. She looked over as my Dad reached out for a wild blackberry bush and said, “Chinni, you got a wart on your hand, son, come ere”. She scowered the ground and I wondered “what in the world is she looking for?” She walked close to a huge pine tree and picked up a piece of wood, bowed her head and closed her eyes. I was completely perplexed! Then she walked over to my Daddy and took his big hand in her tiny one, she rubbed the wood over the wart and handed the wood to my Dad and without skipping a beat, picked up her bucket and starting picking berries again! I watched my Dad as if he had done this a hundred times before; closed his eyes too, then he threw that piece of wood over his right shoulder, picked up his bucket and went back to pickin those berries like nothing had happened!

Treatment for Acne, Blemishes, and Unwanted Freckles:

Mash up 1 cup of strawberries, and then add 2 cups of white vinegar, allowing it to steep on a very low heat for three hours. Strain the pulp and seeds. Massage the remaining liquid on the face and leave overnight. Don't worry, the mixture dries quickly. Wash off in the morning with slightly warm water.

If that remedy did not work: Wet the leaves, mash them thoroughly, into a green paste, and apply them to the blemish.

Another facial recipe for blemishes: Was to mash the strawberries into a juice,

There is a saying on the beach that you never know how many friends and relatives you have until you get a beach house.  That is so true for many of my friends on the beach.  Their homes have been packed all summer.  Of course, that means that they are entertaining and I don’t get to see them as often as during the fall and winter months.  I sure miss my girls.  Thank God for Wednesday nights.  Those of us who are not encumbered with visitors gather on Wednesday night and enjoy a good meal and stimulating conversation.  This past Wednesday there were only a handful of the normal group but it was really nice.

I also look forward to meeting with my friends at WBL meetings.  Although it is a meeting and much more regimented than Wednesday night, I enjoy those women.  Just like Wednesday nights, when a lot of people come to the meeting, it’s fun and informative; but, it’s also so nice when there is a smaller, more intimate group.

I received the most adorable email yesterday:

“Dear Aunt Peggy -

I was real pretty in my embroidered collar - much fancier than the other dogs at our hotel in Cedar Key. Next time my mom will put my collar on right side up!

Love,

Amber Lee Johnson

Chesapeake Bay Retriever and Super Model”

That email was accompanied by photographs of Amber Lee.

The new computer is working fine.  As each day goes by, I remember something, a website, a program, or whatever is on my favorites list of the old computer.  Nevertheless, none of those things have really hampered day-to-day business.  This is a nice machine.

As I mentioned last week, the most difficult thing about the new computer was loading my Quicken program.  By the end of that ordeal, I was flustered and frustrated.  So, Quicken a/k/a Intuit sent me an email asking me to let them know what I thought of their service.  Really?  They made straight F’s and my comment was that if I didn’t need the thing for my CPA, I wouldn’t have it at all.  You can imagine my surprise when, later, I received another email, same email, asking me what I thought of their service.  Rather than berating them once again, I just deleted the email.  You would think that would be the end of it.  If that is what you think, then you have not dealt with this company.  Later, I received another email with the subject line:  “Quick Books Pro POS.”  At this I even called George over to look at it.  Did a light bulb go off in their head and they realized how unhappy I am with them?  Could it be they don’t like their service, either?  Well, I had to open this email.  Much to my surprise, the Intuit Company says POS means “Point Of Service.”  In my book POS still means something totally different.

The most frequently asked question this week was:  “Do you REALLY belong to 58 groups on Facebook?  Yes, I do, but I don’t even know what they are.  I am only active in 2 groups.

I told you about our new customer, Mike Cotton, last week.  We had a meeting this week and at this point we have his logo digitized and stitched out a few time for testing.  This weekend I will be playing around with the embroidered logo on several items that he brought for us.  He is trying to put together a merchandising line of products for his TV show, Senior Xtremers, and I am the embroiderer.

Revamping old t-shirt crew collars was fun last week.  I did a few and have a few more to do.  It is absolutely amazing the change in the look of the shirt.

This week I ordered a dozen white beach towels.  I need them to fill an order for a friend who loved the towels I embroidered with the mermaid in Mylar.  She wants one for her daughter and one for her son-in-law.  For her son-in-law, of course, she wants a merman.  For this type of digitizing, I don’t send to a digitizer because I doubt seriously that the customer would want to pay the $30 digitizing fee.  The problem is that for me to do the digitizing takes a long time.  She ordered the towels a month ago.  So, I’m waiting on the towels to arrive so I can begin the embroidery.

We still have some of the $2 cloth napkins, $4 cloth napkins, market baskets, and fingertip towels.

A few people sent in guesses last week for the contest but no one sent the correct answer.  The fashion designer who made jersey fashionable was Coco Chanel.  Before Chanel jersey was only used for underwear.  Coco Chanel created fashionable and comfortable clothing with jersey.  Had it not been for Coco Chanel, we would not have T-shirts, polo shirts, or the little black dress.

CHRISTMAS is around the corner.  Unbelievable, I know.  But it is July.  Get that Christmas shopping done now and enjoy the holidays.

Cajun folklore is filled with stories and legends, and many of them involve crawfish.

One of the more inventive ones is this:

In the 1750s, when the Acadians first migrated from Nova Scotia to Louisiana,

hundreds of North-Atlantic lobsters, sympathetic to the exiles, decided to follow

them southward along the Atlantic Coast and through the Gulf of Mexico to

the bayous. Along the way, as they swam, the lobsters somehow acquired progressively

smaller shells. By the time they reached Louisiana, they had become

what we now know as crawfish.

Cajun Corner - Vol. 3, No. 27

Cajun Corner – Vol. 3, No. 27 – July 9, 2011

Bon Jour!  Welcome to Cajun Stitchery’s weekly email and welcome to our family.

ΘΘΘΘΘ

Don’t forget to visit our catalog at www.companycasuals.com/cajunstitchery and www.cajunstitchery.etsy.com often.   We are also on Twitter and Facebook.

The 4th of July weekend was filled with fun.  This weekend is filled with the Blue Angels at the beach.

As planned George and I joined several neighbors for the 4th and enjoyed our friend from Pennsylvania who plans to move back to the Pensacola area in September.  I did bring my baked bread to the event.  I baked bread all weekend just to make sure that it would turn out okay.  I made bread with my home grown stevia.  It was good but green (stevia is green).  Then I made raisin bread.  George and I ate all of that.  Then I made herb bread with herbs from my garden, and a plain white bread.  We brought the herb and the plain white bread to our 4th of July gathering but I don’t think anyone ate it.  That’s the problem at a lot of these gatherings.  There is so much food and everyone brings something that you cannot possibly eat it all.

This week, however, has been mostly consumed with my crashed computer.  Yep, last weekend I turned my laptop on and there was no picture; just black.  So, I had to buy a new one, which arrived on Wednesday.  The remainder of the week has been spent loading my programs on the new computer.  Not that I have that many programs.  Actually, Wednesday I had all but my Quick Books Pro loaded.  Working day and night since Thursday, I finally got Quick Books Pro installed today.  I had to buy a new one because the old one doesn’t work with Windows 7.  Poo yie, what a hassle.  I’m just glad it is installed now.  Monday will be spent on bookkeeping.  This is also the reason that Cajun Corner is late this week.

Facebook now has “groups.”  I belong to 58 groups, most of which I’ve never even opened to look at them.  I do try to be active on 2 groups.  One is the WBL group, which is the Women’s Business Luncheon group; and, the other is the Support Local Pensacola Businesses group.  Since I’ve spent so much money this week, I’m really trying to get out there and post photographs of my embroidery everywhere.  Support Local Pensacola Businesses group received several photos and comments from me.

Well, I decided that since it was Blue Angels week, I would post a photograph of my little purse that I made for the Fiesta Ball with the Blue Angels embroidered on it.  I guess timing is everything because several people “Liked” it.  Almost immediately after posting that photo a FB friend that I have never personally met, Mike Cotton, commented “what is your phone number?”  Cajun Stitchery is a business and I have no problem giving out my phone number, which I did.  He called and may want some ball caps and polo shirts.  Woohoo!  He explained that among other things, he is a film maker.  I have heard that this area is trying to build its film industry.  Mike has a television show called “Senior Xtreme” which presents local seniors who participate in various extreme hobbies, athletics, music, etc.  The whole point of the show, I believe, is if you are a senior, get off your sofa and start doing things.  Be active in some way.  Anyway, Mike invited George and me to the premier of the airing of the first show.  It was at Kooter Brown’s.   Laugh if you will but this is not Hollywood and Senior Xtreme is not CSI, either.  We did go and we had an enjoyable evening.  We got to meet Mike in person, and vice versa.  The program appeared very professional and entertaining.  The extreme seniors featured on the program were at the viewing, as well.  Besides, I do want to support local Pensacola businesses and hope they support me.

You know how a carpenter’s home is the last to be repairs; and, a mechanics car always needs a tune-up?  It turns out that an embroiderer doesn’t have a lot of embroidery for herself.  Prior to going to the Senior Xtreme premier (and after loading Quick Books Pro) I spent the day embroidering for me.  I took one of my t-shirts (office uniform) and embroidered a new neckline.  Then I embroidered large flowers on the front and a beautiful lace dragon on the back.  It actually turned out very nice.  I wanted to wear it to the premier and I knew the dress would be casual.  Embroidering a new neckline on t-shirts is a lot of fun.  The important part, of course, is that the crew neckline, that is so constraining, is gone.  Jersey is about the most comfortable fabric available.  Why not turn your comfortable, plain looking t-shirt into a comfortable, stylish shirt?

SALE:  We still have some of the $2 cloth napkins.  These are the 20 inch square, restaurant quality napkins with hemmed edges.  The colors that we have in stock are:

1.      Purple

2.      Lavender

3.      Royal Blue

4.      White

5.      Teal

6.      Brown

7.      Sea Foam Green

8.      Navy blue

9.      Pink

The pink, navy blue and some white napkins were actually found in my fingertip towel stock this week.  I’m selling all of these (in-stock) napkins for $2 each; first come, first served.  They make great Christmas presents.  I highly suggest you buy them now.

We do have 5 dozen ivory napkins, 20” x 20”, with hemmed edges, restaurant quality, for $4 each.

SALE:  It’s Christmas in July, mes amis.  More stock clearance…fingertip towels for $2 each.  These make beautiful Christmas gifts.  The hot pink is especially fashionable these days.  The black towels would be beautiful with a design or monogram in solid white.  These are the colors in stock:

1.  White

2.  Pink

3.  Yellow

4.  Green

5.  Black

We still have some market baskets in stock: purple, red, hot pink, blue, and the black with white polka dots.  These are the regular sized market baskets that are 18"L x 11.5"W x 9"H with Collapsible/Removable Frame.  The price, without embroidery, ranges from $22 (for solid colors) to $28 (polka dot), each.   A name or initials would be $5.  Of course, the more embroidery you want on the basket, the more the cost.

Last week’s contest was so much fun.  Several people tried to guess the answer.  A few came very close.  In fact, some got the answer, but in English.  My nickname was always in Cajun French.  My mother’s nickname for me was Tit (pronounced teet) Crot.  The winner was Paulette Provost.  She will receive the cute pink canvas purse with her monogram embroidered on it.  Remember, you can only win once every 2 months to give everyone a chance.

CONTEST:  First person to answer correctly is the winner.  What fashion designer made jersey fashionable?

The winner will receive their monogram on a set of 4 in-stock napkins (see above for available colors).

CHRISTMAS is around the corner.  Unbelievable, I know.  But it is July.  Get that Christmas shopping done now and enjoy the holidays.

Rougarou represents a variant pronunciation and spelling of the original French loup-garou.[1] According to Barry Jean Ancelet, an academic expert on Cajun folklore and professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, the tale of the rougarou is a common legend across French Louisiana. Both words are used interchangeably in southern Louisiana. Some people call the monster rougarou; others refer to it as the loup garou.

The rougarou legend has been spread for many generations, either directly from French settlers to Louisiana (New France) or via the French Canadian immigrants centuries ago.

In the Cajun legends, the creature is said to prowl the swamps around Acadiana and Greater New Orleans, and possibly the fields or forests of the regions. The rougarou most often is described as a creature with a human body and the head of a wolf or dog, similar to the werewolf legend.

Often the story-telling has been used to inspire fear and obedience. One such example is stories that have been told by elders to persuade Cajun children to behave. According to another variation, the wolf-like beast will hunt down and kill Catholics who do not follow the rules of Lent. This coincides with the French Catholic loup-garou stories, according to which the method for turning into a werewolf is to break Lent seven years in a row.

A common blood sucking legend says that the rougarou is under the spell for 101 days. After that time, the curse is transferred from person to person when the rougarou draws another human’s blood. During that day the creature returns to human form. Although acting sickly, the human refrains from telling others of the situation for fear of being killed.[2]

Other stories range from the rougarou as a headless horseman to the rougarou being derived from witchcraft. In the latter claim, only a witch can make a rougarou—either by turning into a wolf herself, or by cursing others with lycanthropy.[

Thanks to Paulette Provost for the following recipe:

Elephant Stew

1 medium sized elephant

Salt and pepper

2 rabbits (optional)

Cut the elephant in small bite-size pieces.  This will take about 3 months.  Add enough gravy to cover.  Cook over kerosene fire for about 4 weeks at 465 degrees.  This will serve 3,800 people.  If more are expected, 2 rabbits may be added, but do this only in an emergency.  Most people do not like hare in their stew!
